Flowers are so pretty and they also play an important role in the environment. Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we discover fascinating facts about flowers. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” This beloved Broadway musical sets Dorothy’s adventures in the Land of Oz to music in a dazzling, lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul! JCPRD Special Olympics & Feed the Need Annual Golf Tournament

Join us for a terrific morning of golf during the JCPRD Special Olympics & Feed the Need Golf Tournament at Heritage Park Golf Course. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit JCPRD Special Olympics and Johnson County food pantries. Paws in the Park at Shawnee Mission Park Beach

Unleash your dog for a water party! Paws in the Park provides an opportunity for dog owners to enjoy a morning at the beach with their pooch. Enjoy organized dog activities in the water and swimming with your dog. This dog-tastic event is free and pre-registration is not required. Be sure not to get stranded on the wrong beach – all the tail wagging will take place at the Shawnee Mission Park Beach, and not the beach in the Off-Leash Area. Paws in the Park is being held in conjunction with A Day in the Park, a day-long celebration of our community’s trails, parks and recreational spaces that includes a wide variety of free activities throughout the park. Free Fishing, Boating and Archery Weekend at Various JCPRD Parks

Take advantage of this annual permit-free weekend for fishing, boating (Shawnee Mission, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks only), and archery (Shawnee Mission Park only). This coincides with the State of Kansas’ “Free Fishing and Park Entrance Days” at state parks whereby state fishing permits are also waived. Fishing, boating, and archery permits will be waived in the designated JCPRD parks on these days only. JCPRD trout permits are still required if fishing for trout at Shawnee Mission and Kill Creek Park lakes. Regular park hours for these days are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Kill Creek, Heritage and Shawnee Mission parks, 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Antioch Park, and dawn to dusk at the Streamway parks. A Day in the Park at Shawnee Mission & Kill Creek Parks

Join us for this free, day-long celebration of our community’s trails, parks and recreational spaces. There will be a wide variety activities for the entire family throughout Shawnee Mission Park and along the adjoining Streamway trail. There also will be free admission to the beaches at Shawnee Mission Park from noon to 6 pm and Kill Creek Park from noon to 6 pm. Enjoy free half-hour pedal boat, kayak, and paddleboard rentals at the marinas in Shawnee Mission Park from 10 am to 7 pm and free half-hour pedal boat, canoe, and kayak rentals at the marina in Kill Creek Park from 1 pm to 5 pm. Concessions will be available at Shelter #3 in Shawnee Mission Park. The event is being held in conjunction with National Trails Day and coincides with JCPRD’s annual free fishing weekend when both Kansas and District fishing and boating permits are waived. Mid-Summer’s Night Cache at Shawnee Mission Park

Looking for a way to keep the kids busy this summer? Look no further! This modern day scavenger hunt is a great way to get out of the house and get moving. We provide you with the GPS device, an introductory how to, and a goodie bag at the end of the hunt. After finding the caches, join us at the fire pit for hotdogs and S`mores. Participants registering as a family will be loaned one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will each receive a GPS unit to use. Meet at Shelter #2. This two-hour session is just $10 ($11 for nonresident) per person, or $27 ($30 nonresident) for a family (up to four.) The Roeland Park Lifeguards are participating in the Lifeguard Olympics on August 1, if you would like to come and watch the festivities, please bring a canned food item to get in the door. Check out Sizzle the Bull and the speedy T-Bones during our game day outing! The T-Bones play the Grand Prairie Texas Groundhogs and we plan on crushing the competition! Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon at Shawnee Mission Park

For 31 years the Johnson County Park & Recreation District has hosted the Shawnee Mission Triathlon and this year welcomes the return of Open Options, formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Kansas City, as our title sponsor. The Shawnee Mission Triathlon long course consists of a 1000 meter swim, followed by an 18 mile bike, and a 4.5 mile run in Shawnee Mission Park. The short course consists of a 500 meter swim, followed by a 9 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. The Duathlon is a new addition in 2015. The distances for the duathlon are a 3.1 mile run, a 13.5 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. This event is limited to 700 entries and typically fills weeks in advance prior to race day. The Great American Family Campout at Shawnee Mission Park

Come join us for the Eighth Annual Great American Family Campout. Whether you are an experienced camper or just looking for an activity to share with your family, this is your opportunity to sleep under the stars in the safety of the largest park in Johnson County. The package includes passes to Shawnee Mission Park Beach, pedal boat rental and tickets to The Theatre in the Park’s production of “Annie Warbucks.” As a special bonus you will receive early admittance to the show. Campers will need to bring their own camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, etc.). Saturday evening dinner is not provided. Donuts, juice, and milk will be provided Sunday morning. This family-friendly event is just $30 for a family of up to 4, $10 for individuals, and three and under are free. Sunflower Craft Social at Matt Ross Community Center

Animal Tales Storytime - Creek Discovery at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Splish, splash…who’s at the creek? Well, join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we learn all about crawdads and other critters you might find in a creek. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required.
