Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound at Great Plains SPCA This community shelter dog walking program provides adults and families with children an innovative way to increase physical activity. Participants will meet weekly through August 31 at the Great Plains SPCA shelter to walk with a shelter dog on the nearby Turkey Creek Trail or at Hickory Hills Park. Participants will find motivation to further their physical activity as they help increase community awareness about dogs available for adoption. Canine benefits include, better socialization, more exercise and leash-walking practice all of which make these furry friends more adoptable. Participants should not bring their own furry friends. *Cancelled* Mid-Summer’s Night Cache at Shawnee Mission Park Looking for a way to keep the kids busy this summer? Look no further! This modern day scavenger hunt is a great way to get out of the house and get moving. We will provide you the GPS device, an introductory how-to, and a new prize for each cache. After the hunt, join us at the fire pit for hotdogs and S`mores. Participants registering as a family will receive one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will each receive a GPS unit. This two-hour session is just $10 ($11 for nonresident) per person, or $20 ($22 nonresident) for a family (up to four.) JCPRD Beaches & Marinas 2013 Season Opening Weekend The Johnson County Park & Recreation District will open their summer seasons the weekend of May 25. The facilities include: The Shawnee Mission Park Beach and Shawnee Mission Park Marina and the Kill Creek Park Beach and Marina. Shawnee Mission Park and Kill Creek Park beaches open for their seasons on May 25. Shawnee Mission Park Beach will be open from 12 pm to 4 pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from 12 pm to 6 pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday through August 4. Kill Creek Park Beach will be open only on weekends with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hours of 12 pm to 6 pm, also through August 4. Both beaches accept cash only. Season passes are also available. The Shawnee Mission Park Marina has been open on Saturdays and Sundays since May 4, but starting on May 25 it will begin its summer season and be open from 10 am to 7 pm daily through August 4. Also beginning May 25, Kill Creek Park Marina will be open from 1 pm to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, also through August 4. Both marinas offer boat rentals, including pedal boats, fishing boats, canoe, and kayak rentals. Patrons should be aware that while the Shawnee Mission Park Marina accepts credit cards, the Kill Creek Park Marina does not and neither facility accepts checks. A Day in the Park at Shawnee Mission & Kill Creek Parks Join us for this free, day-long celebration of our community’s trails, parks and recreational spaces. There will be wide variety activities for the entire family throughout Shawnee Mission Park and along the trail in the adjoining Mill Creek Streamway Park. There also will be free admission to the beaches at Shawnee Mission and Kill Creek parks, and free pedal boat and canoe rentals at the marinas in Shawnee Mission, and Kill Creek parks. The day also includes the district’s annual Paws in the Park event, an opportunity for pet owners to enjoy a morning of organized water activities with their dog at Shawnee Mission Park Beach. A Day in the Park is being held in conjunction with National Trails Day and coincides with JCPRD’s annual free fishing weekend when both Kansas and district fishing and boating permits are waived. Paws in the Park at Shawnee Mission Park Beach Unleash your dog for a water party! Paws in the Park provides an opportunity for dog owners to enjoy a morning at the beach with their pooch. Enjoy organized dog activities in the water and swimming with your dog. This dog-tastic event is free and pre-registration is not required. Be sure not to get stranded on the wrong beach – all the tail wagging will take place at the Shawnee Mission Park Beach, and not the beach in the Off-Leash Area.
