Christmas Tree Recycling at The Theatre, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks

Natural tree collections begin Dec. 26 at The Theatre in the Park, located just north of the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Park, and the marina parking lots of Heritage Park Marina and Kill Creek parks. Trees will be collected at all three sites from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 during regular winter park hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except at Shawnee Mission Park, which opens at 6 a.m. No yard waste will be accepted - only Christmas trees. Wrappers should be removed from the discarded trees as well as any remaining decorations, particularly “icicles” and decorations made from mylar, shiny plastic, or aluminum. There is no charge for the disposal of trees, and this program is open to anyone regardless of residency. Please call for more information.

Sunday Family Series - The Good, the Bad, and the Smelly at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Take a different look at some of the not-so-glamorous animals found in our park such as spiders, snakes, and skunks. These critters may not be loveable to all, but learn why they are important to our lifestyles and environment. Live snakes and spiders will be displayed. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $3 per person including adults (ages two and under are free). Pre-registration is not required.

Animal Tales Storytime - Furry Friends at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Today we’re talking about our warm-blooded, furry friends - mammals! Join us today as we listen to stories, sing some songs and enjoy a visit from a special animal friend and learn some super awesome facts about mammals. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required.

Archeology Dig at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Become an archeologist and discover who was here before us. Excavate real artifacts during a simulated dig. Then explore how archeologists reconstruct the culture of ancient societies and tell the “story” of prehistoric humans. This educational event for ages 9 and older is just $5 per person, $7 for nonresidents. Reservations required. Register today.

Sunday Family Nature Series - Predators on the Prowl at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! Discover predators large and small that call Kansas home. What predators are here now and what has been here in the past? Are there mountain lions or bears here? Why are they important parts of healthy ecosystems? Learn the answers to these questions and what to do if you encounter one of these magnificent creatures. See and touch real wolf, coyote, bobcat, and bear fur. Examine skulls, teeth, and tracks. Meet two live predators! Great Backyard Bird Count at Ernie Miller Nature Center

It’s easy as one-two-three. Every year biologists and researchers count on “you” to help them determine the health of bird populations here in North America. Join us as we count birds and contribute to a worthy cause. It just takes 15 minutes and you may see Northern Cardinals, Black-capped Chickadees, and many more feathered friends. Learn about the birds that spend winters in Northeast Kansas from experienced birders from Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City. This is a free event and pre-registration is not required.

2017 Winter Trout Program at Two JCPRD Lakes

Come watch today’s stocking as 1,600 lbs. of trout are stocked at Kill Creek Park Lake at 2:30 p.m. and 3,800 lbs. are stocked in Shawnee Mission Park Lake at 3:45 p.m. After the fish are stocked, both lakes will be closed to all fishing until the siren start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, heralds the beginning of the 2017 trout season.
