Behind-the-Scenes Museum Tour at JoCo Arts & Heritage Center

Join us for a behind the scenes tour of the Johnson County Museum’s collections storage facility at the new Arts & Heritage Center! Led by museum staff, visitors will learn why we collect, how we collect, and the importance to our local community. Our collection features over 17,000 3D objects and over one million images. The Arts & Heritage Center facility holds the museum’s two-dimensional collection, including manuscript collections, maps, photographs, and quilts. Scout groups welcome! To schedule a separate time for your group of six to 12 people, please call (913) 715-2570. This informative event is $10 for adults or $9 for seniors (60+), $8 for children and includes museum and KidScape admission. Museum members are $4 - members call (913) 831-3359 to register. Overnight Fishing at Shawnee Mission Park

Grab your fishing pole and lantern for the final overnight fishing opportunity of the season at Shawnee Mission Park! The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers ages 16-74 will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park & Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. The Great Solar Eclipse of 2017 at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Come experience the event of a lifetime as we observe an eclipse of the sun! While just off the path of the totality, we will experience a partial eclipse with 99 percent of the sun obscured by the moon. Learn why this awe-inspiring event happens and what it meant to our ancestors from around the world. In the event of clouds on this day, we will stream the event from another location. Reservation required and includes a pair of eclipse viewing glasses. This event is $8 per person, $9 nonresidents and fee is non-refundable. Ages five and under free. Total Eclipse in the Parks - at Antioch Park, Heritage Park & The Theatre in the Park

Bring a blanket or lawn chair, pack plenty of water, purchase lunch from local food trucks, then settle in to enjoy the celestial event of the century. The 2017 solar eclipse will pass through the entire country and you're invited to view the partial eclipse (99.8%) with area parks and community organizations in Johnson County and the peak eclipse viewing will be at 1:08 p.m. The first 200 people at each park will receive a free pair of solar eclipse viewing glasses. 50 Plus Summer Sunflower Bingo and Cookout in the Park at Antioch Park

Celebrate the Kansas state flower with 12 games of bingo and lunch in the park! Grilled burgers, chips, juicy watermelon, dessert, and refreshing lemonade will be served. Event will take place at Shelter 4 (on the north side of the lake). Bingo winners will be awarded prizes ranging from gift bags to gift certificates with a special blackout prize. JCPRD U Kids Triathlon at Kill Creek Park

They’re always on the move anyway, why not make it official? Youth participating in this triathlon will compete in a race against similar age groups, completing swim, bike and run portions. Moths in the Moonlight at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Like a moth to a flame, be drawn into the secret lives of these fascinating insects. We have all seen moths flying around our porch lights. Why do they do that? Come and learn about their lifecycle and the differences between butterflies and moths. Using black lights, we will attract live moths and other insects and we will play interactive games. This interesting evening is just $3.50 per person, including adults and will be paid on site. Recommended for ages 7 and older with an adult. For more information and reservations, please call. JCPRD Women’s Triathlon & Duathlon at Kill Creek Park

The 10th annual JCPRD Women’s Triathlon at Kill Creek Park will consist of a 500 meter swim, followed by a 10.6 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. The Duathlon Course will consist of a 3.1 mile run, followed by a 10.6 bike, and a 3.1 mile run. Teams can consist of two or three person teams. Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club’s Float Fly at Shawnee Mission Park

The public is invited to come watch as radio-controlled aircraft take off and land on the water at Shawnee Mission Park Lake when the Shawnee Mission Remote Control Club (SMRCC) conducts its 5th Annual Float Fly. This event, which is free for spectators to attend, will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. near Shelter #6 on the northwest side of the lake near the dam. Fall Group Hayrides at Shawnee Mission & Heritage Parks

Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Heritage Park or the beautiful Oak Ridge Parklands in Shawnee Mission Park. Our hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $7 per person, and groups will need to reach an $80 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week and Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please call to reserve a date and time for your group. Hayrides are available from September 16 through November 19. Two weeks advance registration is required.

Family Fishing Nights at TimberRidge Adventure Center

Join us for a family fun night of fishing. Dinner of hotdogs, chips, and apples will be provided from 5:30 to 6 pm. Fishing at Catfish pond from 6 to 7 pm with boats available. We will end the evening roasting marshmallows at a campfire from 7 to 7:30 pm. Staff will assist with boats and can help with basic fishing questions (life vests must be worn). Bring your own pole and tackle or we can provide a fishing pole. We will also provide bait and marshmallows. Participants age 16 and older are required to have a Kansas fishing license. Licenses will not be sold on site. Program fee is nonrefundable. Parents need to be able to assist their children with fishing. This fun family event is just $10 per person, $11 for nonresidents. Flight of the Monarch at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Celebrate the Monarch butterfly’s amazing annual migration. Join us in capturing, tagging, and releasing them to continue their journey to Mexico. Learn about these amazing insects and other native butterflies. Wear long pants to protect your legs as you run through the prairie and closed toed shoes to protect your feet. We have a limited number of insect nets, so you are welcome to bring your own. You will get tags to take home. Fall Public Hayrides at Oak Ridge at Shawnee Mission Park

In addition to fall hayrides for organized groups, JCPRD offers this annual opportunity for individuals and family members to enjoy the crisp autumn air from a tractor-drawn haywagon without having to worry about reaching minimum numbers or placing a deposit. Like the group program, this hayride will last approximately one hour, and will be followed by a one-hour campfire with apple cider and marshmallows. The cost is just $7 per person. Participants will meet at Site A at Oak Ridge at Shawnee Mission Park. Advance registration is required by Sept. 23. Register online today!

Cub Scouts Bear Adventure at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Take a one mile hike and visit stations along the way to earn your Fur, Feathers and Ferns Adventure. See some of the live nature center animals up-close and observe the wildlife in the park with binoculars. See a working compost bin and worm bin and learn about composting. Learn about extinct and endangered animals. Smell and taste herbs and plant an herb to take home. Cars in the Park at The Theatre in the Park

Shine up your car, truck, motorcycle, or specialty vehicle for the seventh annual Cars in the Park car show! Admission is free for spectators, and food concessions will be available. There will be a 50/50 pot and raffle. We will have participant choice judging for awards. If you are a vendor or would like information on sponsorship opportunities, please email Lindsey at lindsey.minnick@jocogov.org. Proceeds from this event go to benefit JCPRD Special Olympics programs so that athletes may afford to participate in many different activities. Each entry is $20 in advance, $25 day of the show.
