Experience a traditional 1904 old-fashioned Christmas! Celebrate a traditional community Christmas with letter writing to Santa with pen and ink and create your very own ornament. Sip, munch, and meet other adults interested in hearing about Johnson County Park & Recreation’s new 50 Plus Programs debuted in the January-April My JCPRD Activities catalog. Holidays for the Animals at Ernie Miller Nature Center

The holidays are a time of gifts and generosity. Whether you’re an individual, family, or a group looking to make a difference, how about contributing a gift to the animals at the Ernie Miller Nature Center? The Nature Center has ongoing needs for supplies for both the animals we keep at the center and the wild animals that come to our feeders. Please look over the following list and consider making a contribution: newspapers, brown & green duct tape, various sizes of clear critter totes/ pet keepers boxes with lids; bags of reptile bedding; gift certificates to LifeTime Pets, Price Chopper, Wal-Mart, or Petland; pinewood shavings, cat litter (non-clumping), bleach, fragrance free laundry soap; bags of safflower or black oil sunflower seeds (no mixes, please); suet cake; rolls of ¼ inch & 3/8 inch sisal rope; white and apple cider vinegar; Thanks in advance! Donors who wish to be recognized will have their names listed in the Nature Center’s Tracks newsletter so please take time to record your donation at the Nature Center!

Lanesfield School Country Christmas Concert at Lanesfield Historic Site

Join us for a special Christmas concert in the schoolhouse, featuring the Edgerton Rainbow Connection Children’s Choir. The performance will begin at 1:30 pm, followed by a visit from Santa, crafts, and free refreshments. Bring your camera!

Holiday Marketplace at Roeland Park Community Center

Gather your family and friends for this festive holiday morning. The Holiday Marketplace is open to shoppers of all ages. Children will enjoy a visit from Santa, holiday crafts, and a special shopping experience to find the perfect gift for any member of their family. Volunteers will be on hand to help kids purchase presents for family and friends and assist in the wrapping to keep the gifts a surprise. All gifts available for purchase will be $10 or less and there will be a free gift wrap station. Gingerbread house making and lunch available for purchase. KC WildLands 17th Annual Red Cedar Christmas Tree Event

Kansas City WildLands, in partnership with JCPRD, is again offering the public an opportunity to remove invasive red cedars and take them home to decorate for the holidays! The areas we will be focusing on have a wonderful range of tree sizes and shapes, from Charlie Brown Specials to perfect behemoths fit for a Mayor’s Christmas Tree, with plenty of household sizes mixed in. Haywagons will get you to the trees and get your trees back to your car. Please bring a handsaw (no chainsaws or axes!) and rope to tie your tree to your vehicle. Family Fun Day at the Johnson County Museum - Retro Holiday Fun!

Celebrate the holidays 1950s style! Explore the museum’s signature exhibition featuring the 1950s All-Electric House decorated for Christ¬mas, and play in the past in KidScape! Tour our temporary exhibit, “Let’s Celebrate: Johnson County Museum is 50!” Have hands-on fun with retro activities and crafts in the museum from 11:30 to 2:30 pm. Pre-registration not required. Breakfast With Santa at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Kids! Bring an adult and have a yummy breakfast of pancakes and juice followed by a visit with Santa! Santa will explain the winter habits of his animal friends and will also help you construct a gift for wildlife. Of course, Santa will have a gift for each child and will listen to your Christmas list. This magical holiday event, for ages 3-5 with an adult, is $7 per person, including adults, $8 nonresidents. Winter Solstice Celebration at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Take a break from the busy holiday festivities as we walk through the woods, along little Cedar Creek to witness the natural display of winter’s quiet time. The trails will be lit by luminaries. Warm up by the fireside and listen to star stories about the longest night of the year. Visit live owls and discover animal mysteries of survival during the long winter. Gather round for campfire treats of toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. Drop in for ongoing activities. Please note: Portions of this program will be outdoors, please dress for the weather. Behind-the-Scenes Museum Tour at JoCo Arts & Heritage Center

Interact with museum staff as you learn why we collect, how we collect, and the importance to our local community. Our collection features over 17,000 3D objects and over one million images. The Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center holds the museum’s two-dimensional collection, including manuscripts, maps, photographs, and quilts. To schedule a separate time for your group of six to 12 people, or a tour for youth, please call (913) 826-ARTS. Christmas Tree Recycling at The Theatre, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks

Natural tree collections begin Dec. 26 at The Theatre in the Park, located just north of the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Park, and the marina parking lots of Heritage Park Marina and Kill Creek parks. Trees will be collected at all three sites from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 during regular winter park hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except at Shawnee Mission Park, which opens at 6 a.m. No yard waste will be accepted - only Christmas trees. Wrappers should be removed from the discarded trees as well as any remaining decorations, particularly “icicles” and decorations made from mylar, shiny plastic, or aluminum. There is no charge for the disposal of trees, and this program is open to anyone regardless of residency. Please call for more information.
