“Back to the 80’s” (Rated PG) at The Theatre in the Park

The 80s rock! So, like grab a blanket or chair and a picnic dinner and get ready this this like high-energy musical with contemporary flair that will like totally knock your neon socks off! Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for youth (ages 4-10), and children 3 and under are free. The box office opens at 6:00, gates open at 6:30, and curtain is at 8:30. Kansas Symbols at the Ernie Miller Park Amphitheater

Celebrate the birthday of Kansas with the American bison, tiger salamander, and sunflower, just a few of the natural symbols of our great state! With hands-on items and live animals, participants will compare the basic needs of nature, plants, and animals and learn how different organisms use special adaptations and senses to survive in their respective environments. This informative program is just $3 per person and children two and under are free. In the event of inclement weather or excessive heat, the program will be held in the Ernie Miller Nature Center.

Step into an enchanted world for this “tale as old as time” with Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. The Beast must learn to love and be loved so he can be transformed to his former self, but time is running out! Mid-Summer’s Night Cache at Shawnee Mission Park

Looking for a cool way to keep the kids busy this summer? This modern day scavenger hunt is a great way to get out of the house and get moving. Each family is loaned a GPS device and given instructions on how to find the caches hidden around the Small Lakes area of Shawnee Mission Park. Receive a prize after finding the caches, then enjoy grilled hotdogs and S`mores. Meet at Shelter #2. This two-hour session is just $11 ($13 nonresident) per person, or $29 ($32 nonresident) for a family (up to four.) Register today by going to our Activities page and then click on the “Register for Activities” button and do a barcode search for 38301. To add even more fun to the night, head over to The Theatre in the Park after geocaching for Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”! Please preregister before July 25.

Come Sail with Us! at Shawnee Mission Park Lake

All sailors and sailing enthusiasts, ages 18 and older, are warmly welcome to join members of the Johnson County Sailing Society for lunch along with the graduates of their Sailing I class. Bring your sack lunch, and afterwards you will have an opportunity to sail a variety of vessels while participating in water activities like mock races or a sailing scavenger hunt. Matinee at the Museum - “The Grapes of Wrath” (Rated G) at JoCo Arts & Heritage Center

Celebrate Route 66 with a special viewing of “The Grapes of Wrath,” which is adapted from John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, which gave Route 66 its nickname, “the Mother Road.” Before or after the movie, explore the museum’s main exhibit, “Becoming Johnson County,” featuring the 1950s All-Electric House and 1955 Chevy inside the exhibit, and the temporary photography exhibit, “Mother Road Revisited: Route Sixty-Six Then and Now.” Concessions available for purchase. Grab your fishing pole and lantern for the final overnight fishing opportunity at Kill Creek Park! The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers ages 16-74 will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park & Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. Behind-the-Scenes Museum Tour at JoCo Arts & Heritage Center

Join us for a behind the scenes tour of the Johnson County Museum’s collections storage facility at the new Arts & Heritage Center! Led by museum staff, visitors will learn why we collect, how we collect, and the importance to our local community. Our collection features over 17,000 3D objects and over one million images. The Arts & Heritage Center facility holds the museum’s two-dimensional collection, including manuscript collections, maps, photographs, and quilts. Scout groups welcome! The Great Solar Eclipse of 2017 at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Come experience the event of a lifetime as we observe an eclipse of the sun! While just off the path of the totality, we will experience a partial eclipse with 99 percent of the sun obscured by the moon. Learn why this awe-inspiring event happens and what it meant to our ancestors from around the world. In the event of clouds on this day, we will stream the event from another location. Reservation required and includes a pair of eclipse viewing glasses. This event is $8 per person, $9 nonresidents and fee is non-refundable. Ages five and under free. Total Eclipse in the Parks - at Antioch Park, Heritage Park & The Theatre in the Park

Bring a blanket or lawn chair, pack plenty of water, purchase lunch from local food trucks, then settle in to enjoy the celestial event of the century. The 2017 solar eclipse will pass through the entire country and you're invited to view the partial eclipse (99.8%) with area parks and community organizations in Johnson County and the peak eclipse viewing will be at 1:08 p.m. The first 200 people at each park will receive a free pair of solar eclipse viewing glasses. 50 Plus Summer Sunflower Bingo and Cookout in the Park at Antioch Park

JCPRD U Kids Triathlon at Kill Creek Park

They’re always on the move anyway, why not make it official? Youth participating in this triathlon will compete in a race against similar age groups, completing swim, bike and run portions.
