*CANCELLED* Diamonds and Dinosaurs Hunt at Santa Fe Commons Park

Find twinkling jewels and prehistoric dinosaurs with a GPS (Global Positioning Systems) unit! The event begins at the Santa Fe Commons Park gazebo. Each family is loaned one GPS unit and given instructions on how to use the device to find the themed trinkets scattered throughout the park. After finding all the prizes, gather around the picnic tables for a lunch of mini sandwiches, veggies, and cookies. This two-hour session is just $11 ($13 for nonresident) per person, or $29 ($32 nonresident) for a family (up to four.) Pre-registration required by June 22. “A Chorus Line” (Rated PG) at The Theatre in the Park

“A Chorus Line” tells the story of a chorus audition for a Broadway musical and of the achingly poignant ambitions of professional Broadway gypsies trying to land a job in the show. Grab a blanket or chair and a picnic dinner and enjoy an evening under the stars! Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for youth (ages 4-10), and children 3 and under are free. A crawdad, a tadpole, a turtle…these are just a few things we might find when we take a peek in a creek! Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Animal Exploration at Ernie Miller Park Amphitheater

Join one of our Park Police Officers as they tell you stories of their animal encounters in our Johnson County parks. A few critters have been spotted close to where you will be sitting! Discover how Park Police safely search for critters while protecting the animals. See cool items found in the parks and view live animals up close. This is the fifth of seven special Friday night programs to be presented at the outdoor facility this summer. A charge of $3 per person helps cover the cost of the programs. Children two and under are free. In the event of inclement weather or excessive heat, the program will be held in the Ernie Miller Nature Center.

Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon at Shawnee Mission Park

For 32 years the Johnson County Park & Recreation District has produced the Shawnee Mission Triathlon and this year welcomes the return of Open Options, formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Kansas City, as our title sponsor. The Shawnee Mission Triathlon long course consists of a 1000 meter swim, followed by an 18 mile bike, and a 4.5 mile run in Shawnee Mission Park. The short course consists of a 500 meter swim, followed by a 9 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. The Duathlon distances are a 3.1 mile run, a 13.5 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. Together Johnson County Library and Mill Creek Activity Center are offering an out-of-library storytime experience. Storytellers will offer books, stories, songs, puppets, and “6 by 6 Ready to Read” selected especially for preschoolers, but they can be enjoyed by all. Animal Outhouse at Ernie Miller Park Amphitheater

Everybody poops, even the animals! Some animals have interesting ways of getting rid of their waste. We will meet live animals and discover how their nesting and shelters affect their pooping habits. This is the sixth of seven special Friday night programs to be presented at the outdoor facility this summer. A charge of $3 per person helps cover the cost of the programs. Overnight Fishing at Heritage Park

Grab your fishing pole and lantern for another overnight fishing opportunity! The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers ages 16-74 will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park & Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable.

50 Plus Summer Sunflower Bingo and Cookout in the Park at Antioch Park

Celebrate the Kansas state flower with 12 games of bingo and lunch in the park! Grilled burgers, chips, juicy watermelon, dessert, and refreshing lemonade will be served. Event will take place at Shelter 4 (on the north side of the lake). In the event of rain, it will be moved inside to the conference room in Building A. Bingo winners will be awarded prizes ranging from gift bags to gift certificates with the blackout prize of a deluxe sunflower bouquet. This super summer event is just $15 per person. Let’s take a visit to the farmers market! Sit a spell with Mrs. Greenbeans and her persimmons, kumquats, kale and more as she welcomes you to her unique summer grocery stand. She'll invite you to take a close look at some exotic fruits and vegetables and hear some very funny mouth-watering lil' sprout tales!
