*New Location* Christmas Tree Recycling at The Theatre, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks

Natural tree collections begin Dec. 26 at The Theatre in the Park, located just north of the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Park, and the marina parking lots of Heritage Park Marina and Kill Creek parks. Trees will be collected at all three sites from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 during regular winter park hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except at Shawnee Mission Park, which opens at 6 a.m. in the winter. No yard waste will be accepted - only Christmas trees. Wrappers should be removed from the discarded trees as well as any remaining decorations, particularly “icicles” and decorations made from mylar, shiny plastic, or aluminum. There is no charge for the disposal of trees, and this program is open to anyone regardless of residency. Please call for more information.

The Good, the Bad, and the Smelly - Sunday Family Series at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Our popular Sunday Family Series continues as we take a different look at some of the not-so-glamorous animals around such as spiders, snakes, and skunks. These critters may not be loveable to all, but learn why they are important to our lifestyles and environment. Live snakes and spiders will be displayed. Laura’s Legacy at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Celebrate the birthday of Laura Ingalls Wilder, early Kansas pioneer. Participants will make a rag doll, experience lessons from 1800’s school, and hear music from the time period. Laura will tell favorite stories from her childhood long ago. Participants are invited to wear pioneer clothing. Refreshments will be served. Great Backyard Bird Count at Ernie Miller Nature Center

It’s easy as one-two-three. Every year biologists and researchers count on “you” to help them determine the health of bird populations here in North America. Join us as we count birds and contribute to a worthy cause. It just takes 15 minutes and you may see Northern Cardinals, Black-capped Chickadees, and many more feathered friends. Learn about the birds that spend winters in Northeast Kansas from experienced birders from Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City. Be sure to stop by and make a bird feeder from recycled materials. This is a free event and preregistration is not required. Please call for more information.

Howdy Sheriff! at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Take a step back in history and meet a Deputy Sheriff from the old west. Learn about law enforcement in the 1870’s as well as what it means to be a Deputy. Once you get yer learnin’ done with, the Deputy will put you through the paces and make you an “official” deputy! Afterwards meet a real Johnson County Park Police Officer who explains what it means to be a Police Officer in modern times. Come watch today’s stocking as 3,800 lbs. of trout are stocked in Shawnee Mission Park Lake. After the fish are stocked, the lake will be closed to all fishing until the siren start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, heralds the beginning of the 2015 trout season.
