Christmas Tree Recycling at The Theatre, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks

Natural tree collections begin Dec. 26 at The Theatre in the Park, located just north of the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Park, and the marina parking lots of Heritage Park Marina and Kill Creek parks. Trees will be collected at all three sites from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 during regular winter park hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except at Shawnee Mission Park, which opens at 6 a.m. No yard waste will be accepted - only Christmas trees. Wrappers should be removed from the discarded trees as well as any remaining decorations, particularly “icicles” and decorations made from mylar, shiny plastic, or aluminum. There is no charge for the disposal of trees, and this program is open to anyone regardless of residency. Please call for more information.

Bring the whole family to celebrate Kansas’ 157th birthday. Explore the museum’s signature exhibition featuring the 1950s All-Electric House, and play in KidScape! Summer Camp Registration Begins

Online registration begins at 6 a.m., and in-person registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the JCPRD registration office located in Building D in Antioch Park at 6501 Antioch Road in Merriam.

Camp registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Many camps fill quickly, so don’t delay or you may find your first choices unavailable.

Escape Room - Rescue the Animals at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Owen the Outlaw has captured our owl and ferret! Can you help find them? Your team must beat the clock by solving puzzles and using clues to unlock both rooms to help the animals make a great escape! Great Backyard Bird Count at Ernie Miller Nature Center

It’s easy as one-two-three. Every year biologists and researchers count on you to help them determine the health of bird populations here in North America. Join us as we count birds and contribute to a worthy cause. It just takes 15 minutes and you may see Northern Cardinals, Black-capped Chickadees, and many more feathered friends. Learn about the birds that spend winters in Northeast Kansas from experienced birders from Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City. 2018 Winter Trout Program at Kill Creek & Shawnee Mission Park Lakes

Come watch today’s stocking as 1,600 lbs. of trout are stocked at Kill Creek Park Lake at 2:30 p.m. and 3,800 lbs. are stocked in Shawnee Mission Park Lake at 3:45 p.m. After the fish are stocked, both lakes will be closed to all fishing until the siren start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, heralds the beginning of the 2018 trout season.
