A One-Room Schoolhouse Christmas! at Lanesfield Historic Site

Drop in for an old-fashioned Christmas! Write a letter to Santa with pen and ink and create your very own ornament. What do oranges have to do with Christmas? What types of gifts were given? Learn how Christmas was celebrated in 1904! Find old-fashioned stocking stuffers in our gift shop. All ages welcome. On December 3, join us for a special Christmas concert in the schoolhouse, featuring the Edgerton Rainbow Connection Children’s Choir. The performance will begin at 1:30 pm, followed by a visit from Santa and free refreshments. Bring your camera!

KC WildLands 16th Annual Red Cedar Christmas Tree Event

Kansas City WildLands, in partnership with JCPRD, is again offering the public an opportunity to remove invasive red cedars and take them home to decorate for the holidays! The areas we will be focusing on have a wonderful range of tree sizes and shapes, from Charlie Brown Specials to perfect behemoths fit for a Mayor’s Christmas Tree, with plenty of household sizes mixed in. Haywagons will get you to the trees and get your trees back to your car. Please bring a handsaw (no chainsaws or axes!) and rope to tie your tree to your vehicle. Animal Tales Storytime - Winter Weather at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Brrrrrr…winter is on its way! Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we learn all about winter weather. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required. For more information, please call.

Holiday Marketplace at Roeland Park Community Center

Gather your family and friends for this festive holiday morning. The Holiday Marketplace is open to shoppers of all ages. Children will enjoy a visit from Santa, holiday crafts and a special shopping experience to find the perfect gift for any member of their family. Volunteers will be on hand to help kids purchase presents for family and friends and assist in the wrapping to keep the gifts a surprise. All gifts available for purchase will be $10 or less and there will be a free gift wrap station. Lunch available for purchase. Breakfast With Santa at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Kids! Bring a parent and have breakfast followed by a visit with Santa. Enjoy pancakes and juice. Afterwards Santa will explain the winter habits of his animal friends. He will also help you construct a gift for wildlife. Of course, Santa will have a gift for each child and will listen to your Christmas list. 50 Plus Christmas Around the World at Cedar Lake Village

Celebrate Christmas Around the World! Discover different traditions that take place on this special holiday. Cedar Lake Village is opening their doors for a special dinner and holiday music entertainment. Doors open at 5 pm with dinner served at 5:30 pm. This fun holiday event is $8 per person. Take a break from the busy holiday festivities as we walk through the woods, along little Cedar Creek to witness the natural display of winter’s quiet time. The trails will be lit by luminaries. Warm up by the fireside and listen to star stories about the longest night of the year. Visit live owls and discover animal mysteries of survival during the long winter. Gather round for campfire treats of toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. Please note: Portions of this program will be outdoors, please dress for the weather. Advance reservations recommended. Gingerbread Fun at Roeland Park Community Center

Bring the family to for a special morning to get into the holiday spirit. We will make graham cracker gingerbread houses, sip on hot chocolate, and sing along to holiday favorites! Christmas Tree Recycling at The Theatre, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks

Natural tree collections begin Dec. 26 at The Theatre in the Park, located just north of the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Park, and the marina parking lots of Heritage Park Marina and Kill Creek parks. Trees will be collected at all three sites from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 during regular winter park hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except at Shawnee Mission Park, which opens at 6 a.m. No yard waste will be accepted - only Christmas trees. Wrappers should be removed from the discarded trees as well as any remaining decorations, particularly “icicles” and decorations made from mylar, shiny plastic, or aluminum. There is no charge for the disposal of trees, and this program is open to anyone regardless of residency. Please call for more information.
