JCPRD Park Summer Hours Begin

Summer hours go into effect March 1 for many JCPRD parks. These summer hours will stay in effect through Oct. 31. District parks impacted by the new hours are: Antioch Park, Heritage Park, Shawnee Mission Park and Kill Creek Park. Other District parks with year-round dawn to dusk hours include: Camp Branch Glade, Ernie Miller Park, Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park and Streamway Parks System access points. Daring American Women at the Ernie Miller Nature Center

March is Women’s History Month. Let’s celebrate the rich past of American women and girls. Bring your favorite doll and yourself dressed in your favorite fashion from American history. Hear of trials and triumphs from women throughout the centuries. See the fashions of girls during Native American, Revolutionary, Pioneer, Civil War periods and more. Easter Bunny Hide and Seek at Shawnee Mission Park

The Easter Bunny is hiding somewhere in Shawnee Mission Park waiting for your family to find him! The hunt begins with lunch at Shelter #1 before setting out on your adventure. You’ll drive to different places in the park to solve the clues he left, each clue brings you closer to where the Easter Bunny is hiding. Pictures with the Easter Bunny and goodies for the kids are available at the final location. This fun family event is just $10 per person ($11 nonresidents) or $27 per family of four or less ($30 nonresidents). 2015 Auditions for The Theatre in the Park at Blue Valley High School

Dust off your dance shoes and warm up your vocal cords...it's time for the 2015 auditions for The Theatre in the Park! Auditions for ages seven through adult will take place on a first-come, first-served basis from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29. The production teams will break for approximately an hour each day for lunch. Call-back auditions are set for April 4 and 6 and will be by invitation only. Easter (Evening) Egg Hunt at Antioch Park

Grab your basket and head to Antioch Park for a new twist on the Easter egg hunt. The park will be divided into two different scavenger hunts. Ages 4-7 will have a designated area for hunting. Ages 8 and up will walk along the mile trail to dif¬ferent egg drop areas. Each hunter is responsible for going out and finding specific eggs. All participants must have a guardian in attendance. Each hunter guaranteed at least one dozen eggs. Bags will be provided. Pre-registration is required by March 31. This fun holiday event is just $8 per child ($9 nonresidents). Visit booths and hands-on activities. Then pick up your 2015 Passport to Adventure that you can take to area natural and historical sites throughout the year and get it stamped. Trucks & Big Rigs for Kids at The Theatre in the Park

Have you ever wondered what the inside of that big rig or tractor looks like? Do you have a child who LOVES trucks? Bring them out to the park to explore trucks, tractors, construction, and city vehicles up close. Crawl, climb, and sit in the driver’s seat and talk with the real life operators of these vehicles. This year we are featuring a Cars© character tow truck as well as many other kids favorites. Proceeds from this event benefit JCPRD Special Populations/Special Olympics. Animal Tales Storytime - Wiggly Worms at Ernie Miller Nature Center

They’re pretty wiggly and quite slimy…today we are learning about worms! Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we learn surprising and interesting facts about worms. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required.

Indoor Turf Camping at New Century Fieldhouse

It may be too cold to camp outside in April, but not at the New Century Fieldhouse! We are opening up McDonald’s Field at the fieldhouse for tent camping. Revel in the total camping experience with hamburgers, hotdogs, and even s’mores. Sit around the ‘campfire,’ tell stories, and sing songs. Play games like flashlight tag and hide and seek! The whole family will enjoy this outing without going outside. A comfortable way to sleep on the ground and the best part… no BUGS! TimberRidge Adventure Center Open House at TimberRidge Adventure Center

If you have not seen TimberRidge Adventure Center yet, now is your chance! During our annual Open House, choose from several activities: canoeing, kayaking, pedal boating, hiking, BB gun shooting, and archery. Participants need to be eight years or older for the BB gun and archery range activities. All ages are welcome to participate in the Family Fun Treasure Hunt from 11 am - 2 pm. Catch and release fishing also available, however participants age 16 and older are required to have Kansas fishing license. Licenses will not be sold on site. Cops n’ Bobbers will be on site with poles and bait available for use or you may bring your own. Visit and see all the programs and amenities that TimberRidge has to offer. Experience the Hawk’s Nest Climbing Tower! An open climbing event for interested parties ages 12 and older will be held. Climbers will need to pre-register as space is limited. Climbing participants are required to complete medical and liability releases prior to participating. Children under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian’s signature. Climbing enrollment is limited to 40 people. You must call to register for this event.

Mildale Farm Community Day at Mildale Farm

Bring the family out and spend the day exploring the Mildale Farm property during this free public event. Visitors can explore and picnic on the 158-acre site including the 22-acre rental property as well as about 136 acres of adjacent agricultural property, all of which was purchased by JCPRD in 2005. Visitors will be directed to park in the large parking lot near Mildale Farm’s main barn which features peg construction and a hand-laid brick floor. Arts and Craft activities for the kids will take place in the main barn. Catch-and-release fishing in any or all of seven ponds within the 158-acre area will also be offered, so bring your own bait and tackle. While District fishing permits have been waived for this event, Kansas residents ages 16 to 74 and nonresidents 16 and older need to have a Kansas state fishing license. Restrooms will be available, but the property’s two homes and other outbuildings will not be open during this event. Remember, no alcohol is allowed, pets must be on-leash, and vehicles must remain on roadways. For more information, contact Sarah Vogelsberg or visit the Mildale Farm Community Day web page.
