Animal Tales Storytime - Spider Surprise at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Eeek! Did someone say spider? Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we discover fascinating facts about spiders. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. 20th Annual In Step and In Shape Walk at Antioch Park

Celebrate summer at the “In Step and In Shape Walk” and picnic. Enjoy a morning of walking, trying new forms of fitness, visiting vendors, and fun activities. Come listen to the City of Leawood’s Mayor Peggy Dunn, a one-woman civic whirlwind and an avid user of local trails. During lunch, sit back and enjoy some musical entertainment. “Cabaret” (Rated PG-16) at The Theatre in the Park

The Theatre in the Park kicks off its 2016 season with “Cabaret.” Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, “Cabaret” is based on the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Grab a blanket or chair and a picnic dinner and enjoy an evening under the stars! Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for youth (ages 4-10), and children 3 and under are free. Owls: Eyes of the Night at the Ernie Miller Park Amphitheater

Great Horned, Barred, and Screech owls make Ernie Miller Park their home. Meet three live owls as we discover more about these creatures of the night. This is the first of seven special Friday night programs to be presented at the outdoor facility this summer. A charge of $3 per person helps cover the cost of the programs. JCPRD Special Olympics & Feed the Need Annual Golf Tournament

Join us for a terrific morning of golf during the JCPRD Special Olympics & Johnson County Feed the Need Golf Tournament at Heritage Park Golf Course. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit JCPRD Special Olympics and Johnson County food pantries. Overnight Fishing Opportunity at Heritage Park

Grab your fishing pole and lantern for the first overnight fishing opportunity of the year at Heritage Park - and it’s a special one! This opportunity coincides with our “Free Fishing, Boating & Archery Weekend” as well as the State of Kansas’ “Free Fishing and Park Entrance Days” at state parks whereby state fishing permits are also waived. Unleash your dog for a water party! Paws in the Park provides an opportunity for dog owners to enjoy a morning at the beach with their pooch. Enjoy playing catch and swimming with your four-legged friend. This dog-tastic event is free and pre-registration is not required. Be sure not to get stranded on the wrong beach – all the tail wagging will take place at the Shawnee Mission Park Beach, and not the beach in the Off-Leash Area. Paws in the Park is being held in conjunction with A Day in the Park, a day-long celebration of our community’s trails, parks and recreational spaces that includes a wide variety of free activities throughout the park. Free Fishing, Boating and Archery Weekend at Various JCPRD Parks

Take advantage of this annual permit-free weekend for fishing, boating (Shawnee Mission, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks only), and archery (Shawnee Mission Park only). This coincides with the State of Kansas’ “Free Fishing and Park Entrance Days” at state parks whereby state fishing permits are also waived. Fishing, boating, and archery permits will be waived in the designated JCPRD parks on these days only. JCPRD trout permits are still required if fishing for trout at Shawnee Mission and Kill Creek Park lakes. Regular park hours for these days are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Kill Creek, Heritage and Shawnee Mission parks, 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Antioch Park, and dawn to dusk at the Streamway parks. A Day in the Park at Shawnee Mission & Kill Creek Parks

Join us for this free, day-long celebration of our community’s trails, parks and recreational spaces. Enjoy a wide variety of activities for the entire family throughout Shawnee Mission Park and along the adjoining Streamway Trail. Take advantage of free admission to the beaches at Shawnee Mission Park from noon to 6 p.m. and Kill Creek Park from noon to 6 p.m. Enjoy free half-hour pedal boat, kayak, and paddleboard rentals at the marinas in Shawnee Mission Park from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and free half-hour pedal boat, canoe, and kayak rentals at the marina in Kill Creek Park from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Concessions will be available at Shelter #3 in Shawnee Mission Park 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is being held in conjunction with National Trails Day and coincides with JCPRD’s annual free fishing weekend when both Kansas and District fishing and boating permits are waived. Mid-Summer’s Night Cache at Shawnee Mission Park

Looking for a cool way to keep the kids busy this summer? This modern day scavenger hunt is a great way to get out of the house and get moving. Each family is loaned a GPS device and given instructions on how to find the caches hidden around the Small Lakes area of Shawnee Mission Park. Receive a prize after finding the caches, then enjoy grilled hotdogs and S`mores. Participants registering as a family will be loaned one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will each receive a GPS unit to use. Meet at Shelter #2. This two-hour session is just $11 ($13 nonresident) per person, or $29 ($32 nonresident) for a family (up to four.) Diamonds and Dinosaurs Hunt at Santa Fe Commons Park

Find twinkling jewels and prehistoric dinosaurs with a GPS (Global Positioning Systems) unit! The event begins at the Santa Fe Commons Park gazebo. Each family is loaned one GPS unit and given instructions on how to use the device to find the themed trinkets scattered throughout the park. After finding all the prizes, gather around the picnic tables for a lunch of mini sandwiches, veggies, and cookies. This two-hour session is just $11 ($13 for nonresident) per person, or $29 ($32 nonresident) for a family (up to four.) Pre-registration required by June 22.
