Fall Group Hayrides at Shawnee Mission Park

Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Heritage Park or the beautiful Oak Ridge Parklands in Shawnee Mission Park. Our hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await you. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $7 per person, and groups will need to reach an $80 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week and Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call to reserve a date and time for your group. Hayrides are available from September 17 through November 20. Two weeks advance registration is required.

Dino O’Dell at Mill Creek Activity Center

Whether Dino is counting monsters, fixing spaceships or swimming in peanut butter, his interactive songs and tall tales stir the imagination, inspire curiosity and engage the whole child. Come enjoy Dino’s unique blend of folk-rock and reggae. This awesome event is just $3 per person and museum members are free. Advance reservations are required and can be obtained via phone.

Family Fishing Nights at TimberRidge Adventure Center

Join us for a family fun night of fishing. Dinner of hotdogs, chips, and apples will be provided from 5:30 to 6 pm. Fishing at Catfish pond from 6 to 7 pm with boats available. We will end the evening roasting marshmallows at a campfire from 7 to 7:30 pm. Staff will assist with boats and can help with basic fishing questions (life vests must be worn). Bring your own pole and tackle or we can provide a fishing pole. We will also provide bait and marshmallows. Participants age 16 and older are required to have a Kansas fishing license. Licenses will not be sold on site. Parents need to be able to assist their children with fishing. This fun family event is just $10 per person, $11 for nonresidents. Cub Scouts Bear Adventure at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Take a one mile hike and visit stations along the way to earn your Fur, Feathers and Ferns Adventure. See some of the live nature center animals up-close and observe the wildlife in the park with binoculars. See a working compost bin and worm bin and learn about composting. Learn about extinct and endangered animals. Smell and taste herbs and plant an herb to take home. You will meet all of the requirements for the Fur, Feathers, and Fern Adventure. This educational event is $5 per person, including adults, in advance or $7 on site day of event if space is available. Call for more information or to make reservations.

Animal Tales Storytime - Furry Mammals at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Come on by the nature center and hang out with us as we learn about some furry little mammals! This listen and learn activity is for children ages two to six. International Observe the Moon Night at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Join us for a lunar astronomy program as we observe the moon in this internationally coordinated event! Observe the moon through a telescope, learn about lunar phases, make impact craters, your very own moon journal, and more! You may also bring your own binoculars, blanket, or chairs. Whimsical Woods at Ernie Miller Park

There’s nothing scary about this enchanted forest. Enjoy a walk on the trail with the award-winning Nature Center staff. Costumed storybook characters will delight and entertain audiences of all ages. Meet with the Good Fairy and Forest Friends. Live animals, stories, songs, and surprises will highlight childhood favorites. Reservations are required. Group sessions begin every 15 minutes with program length approximately 1½ hours. Storyteller Jo Ho at Mill Creek Activity Center

Join Jo and her not so scary scarecrows for a lively storytime to learn about autumn and harvest time. The kid-size fall mascots will offer lots of giggles in this farmer’s field festival of stories and sing-a-longs. This entertaining story hour is just $2 per person, and museum members are free. Trick-or-Cache at Antioch Park (Two Times)

Try out a new family activity this Halloween! Search for caches filled with candy and trinkets hidden around Antioch Park using Global Positioning Systems (GPS). GPS units, a tutorial, and meal are included during this modern day scavenger hunt. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Participants registering as a family will be loaned one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will each be loaned a GPS unit. Costumes encouraged! If registering for the evening session, bring a flashlight. Join us after your haunted hunt for hotdogs, s’mores, and spooky stories around the fire circle across from Shelter #2. 50 Plus Country Dance at the Lenexa Community Center

Strap on your boots to Line Dance, Two Step, and boogie! It’s going to be a boot scootin’ good time at this country homecoming dance. Mike Riley will keep us rockin’ and groovin’ all night long. Starting at 7:30, an instructor will be teaching country line dancing, this will be a perfect time to learn new steps. Don’t miss out on a chance for door prizes. Refreshments included. Haunted Kansas at Ernie Miller Park

As darkness falls, walk through the trails of Ernie Miller Park and listen to the stories of long ago. Characters from the past will share legends around the campfire. Expect a shiver down the spine and a mild case of goose bumps for those who dare enter the forest on this autumn evening. Group sessions begin every 15 minutes and program is approximately one hour long. This spooky story time is just $5 per person, including adults, paid in advance or $7 on site day of event. This is an outdoor event, so dress appropriately. Advance registration is required. Register today by going to our Online Registration page. This program is recommended for ages 8 and up, and all children must be accompanied by Parent/Guardian or one adult chaperone per group of 5.

Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat - Three (3) JCPRD Locations

Students enrolled in JCPRD’s 29 Out of School Time Programs and Early Childhood Centers will Trick-or-Treat for canned goods instead of candy. Around Halloween they will go door to door, escorted by staff, in the neighborhoods around their schools to solicit donations for area food pantries. Assistance from the public is also sought as collection boxes will be placed at three JCPRD office locations from Oct. 24-28. Those sites are: Building A, Antioch Park; the Administration Building at Shawnee Mission Park; and New Century Fieldhouse. Among the most-needed food items are: canned soup, vegetables, fruit, and meats, boxed meals, peanut butter and jelly and hot and cold cereal. Donations will be distributed to local food pantries. Help us Trick-or-Treat and fill the shelves of our area food pantries.

Mildale Farm Fall Fest at Mildale Farm

Bring the family and spend the day exploring the Mildale Farm property and enjoy a number of fall activities during this free public event. Visitors can explore and picnic on the 158-acre site including the 22-acre rental property as well as about 136 acres of adjacent agricultural property, Park near Mildale Farm’s main barn which features peg construction and a hand-laid brick floor. Nearby, they’ll find cider and hot cocoa and a large pumpkin patch. A tractor-drawn hayride will take visitors to a fire circle in the south-central portion of the Mildale site, where they can roast marshmallows and enjoy storytelling. Catch-and-release fishing in any or all seven ponds within the 158-acre area will also be offered, so bring your own bait and tackle. While district fishing permits have been waived for this event, Kansas residents ages 16 to 74 and nonresidents 16 and older need to have a Kansas state fishing license. Restrooms will be available in the large equestrian barn, but the property’s two homes and other outbuildings will not be open during this event. Healthy Halloween Spooktacular! at the Roeland Park Community Center

Start your family’s Halloween off with a healthy morning that will keep your kids energized throughout the busy day. Come in costume and visit the freaky photo booth, make creepy crafts, enjoy a healthy snack, and enter the haunted classroom. At 10 a.m. the whole family is invited out to the dance floor for a real treat! A personal trainer from Sweat Studio will lead dances and Zumba to your favorite Halloween beats.
