The Theatre in the Park Volunteer Weekend Workdays

The Theatre in the Park is establishing volunteer workdays every Friday afternoon and Saturday mornings from March 1 to June 1 to get the facility ready for the 2008 summer season. This schedule should allow any person or group that wants to volunteer some time to do so according to their own scheduling requirements. If interested in assisting, have question and to provide your skill level please e-mail Bill Gintzel at info@jcprd.com. [Note: Participants should wear work clothes and bring gloves because the day is designed to seek assistance in preparing and repairing any and all blemishes the Theatre needs to attend to in preparation for the upcoming season. We will have jobs for boys, girls, men and woman of all skill and ability levels - This is NOT an event for small children.

Kansas City’s Passport to Adventure 2008

Gather your family and friends of all ages, and pick up your free Kansas City Passport to Adventure at the Ernie Miller Nature Center. Visit participating Kansas City area natural and historical sites, and get your passport stamped each time. Answer the question on the sites’ passport page, and receive a special gift too! Once you have completed the passport, turn it in to the last site visited by September 30th, and you will receive a special prize via mail. Passports to Adventure 2008 may be acquired and stamped by visiting any of these participating sites. For participating sites please visit our Kansas City Passport to Adventure web catalog page.

Roeland Park Aquatic Center to close for summer preparations

The Roeland Park Aquatic Center will close portions of two weeks as annual preparations are made for the facility's summer season. The RPAC will be closed to the public from May 12 through 16 and open with limited hours for lap swimming only from May 19 through 23. JCPRD staff will take down the air-supported dome which covers the 50-meter main pool. The RPAC plans to reopen to the general public on May 24 just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. Summer open swim sessions are held daily Monday through Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. For more information about the close and about the RPAC, please visit our Roeland Park Aquatic Center web page.

The Summertime Arts and Crafts show at the Merriam Turkey Creek Festival

The Summertime Arts and Crafts show is a program of JCPRD. This annual event is held in conjunction with the City of Merriam’s Turkey Creek Festival. T.A.K.E. Self Defense Program at Kauffman Stadium

First of Two Presentations of T.A.K.E. Self Defense Program on the Field at Kauffman Stadium. Two dates have been scheduled this year for presentation of The Ali Kemp Educational (T.A.K.E.) Seminars on the playing field at Kauffman Stadium. The Kansas City Royals, 98.1 KUDL, and JCPRD have teamed to present these free programs.
The first seminar will take place beginning at 10 a.m. on May 17, while the second will start at 9 a.m. on Aug. 16. Participant registration form is located at www.kansascity.royals.mlb.com/kc/community/take_defense.jsp, but officials said walk-in participants will be accepted at both sessions on the day of the event. Those planning to attend are asked to enter the stadium through Gate 2, park in Lot A, and proceed to Gate B. In case of inclement weather on the day of the event, those planning to attend are asked to call (913) 236-1290 to be advised of cancellation or rescheduling of the event. The T.A.K.E. self-defense program represents a living legacy in honor of Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old Leawood resident who was murdered while working as a lifeguard at a neighborhood pool in Johnson County. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and to give women ages 12 and older the self-protection skills they need to avoid becoming victims of violent crime.

2007 BikeSource 21st Annual Duathlon & Triathlon at Heritage Park

The BikeSource Duathlon and Triathlon is held at Heritage Park and consists of a combination of swimming, biking, and running as outlined below. Triathlon teams may enter one of the following categories: men, women, coed, family, and corporate. The transition area, located in the marina parking lot, provides an exciting location for spectators to cheer on the participants. Bring your family and friends for a great time. This event is limited to 500 entries and typically fills two weeks prior to race day. Early registration is strongly encouraged. This is not a USAT sanctioned race; therefore USA Triathlon membership is not required. 13th Annual “In Step and In Shape” Walk - 50 Plus

Join a celebration of good health and fitness for mature, active adults! Walk the scenic trails surrounding Deanna Rose Farmstead (1.5 or 3 miles), followed by health screenings and expo at the Ritz Charles. Don’t miss our special guest speaker, door prizes, lunch and much more! The first 200 registrations are guaranteed a participant shirt. Walk participants check in at the Ritz Charles, between 8 and 9 am. Health expo begins at 9 am at the Ritz Charles. This five hour event will cost $12 per person.

Pack the kids up, grab the lantern, pack up a few snacks and grab the fishing gear for JCPRD's Overnight Fishing at Shawnee Mission Park. The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers ages 16-64 will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park and Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. Park opens after 11 p.m. for fishing only. Questions: contact Mike Ray, Superintendent of Park Safety & Interpretation.

Free Fishing Weekend at all JCPRD Parks

The weekend of June 7 and 8 has been established as free fishing weekend in Johnson County Park and Recreation District facilities where fishing is normally allowed. This coincides with the State of Kansas’ “Free Fishing and Park Entrance Days,” at state parks whereby state fishing permits are also waived. Fishing, boating, and archery permits will be waived in District parks from 11 am - 5:30 pm on these days only.

Cookout: Summer Fun in the Sun (All Ages)

Have some summer fun by joining the Olathe 50 Plus and the Boys & Girls Club for a picnic at the park. Eat and socialize with participants of all ages. There will be games, stories and more. Celebration: 4th Annual KidFest (All Ages)

JCPRD’s Children’s Services Division will once again transform Antioch Park into a carnival-like atmosphere for this four-hour event. Planned are a variety of activity booths, including face and hair painting, ring and bean-bag tosses, tile painting, bead jewelry making, a cake walk, crown decorating, and more. These booths will be located near the recently-renovated Dodgetown playground and near Antioch Park’s administration buildings and will be manned by staff from Children’s Services’ 25 after school and four preschool programs. Also planned are: moon walks, a Build-It Workshop sponsored by Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, a fire truck from the City of Merriam, concession area, and more. This 4 hour, pay at the site, event is only $4 per child (includes wristband) and only $2 for adults or free with canned food donation.

The 5th Annual Pet Contest: Paws in the Park

Paws in the Park provides an opportunity for dog owners to show off their pooch in a variety of contests. Watch many impressive dog demonstrations and check out the best dog related businesses in town, all while helping homeless animals from a local shelter. New for 2008 is a one-mile dog walk on the trail at Shawnee Mission Park, and an opportunity to swim with your pooch at the beach! Note: this event takes place at the regular Shawnee Mission Park Beach, not at the dog beach in the Off-Leash Area. This is a 5 hour event. The cost is $15 per/dog (walk, contest entry & T-shirt included) Registration is required. You will be able to register on-line via our Special Events page the week of April 28th.

Chill out with the grandkids by enjoying a morning full of indoor & outdoor games for all ages including ping pong, Frisbee, shuffleboard, a cookie walk, crafts and more. Overnight: The Great American Family Campout (All Ages)

What could be better than a family campout right here in Johnson County? Whether you are an experienced camper or just looking for an activity to share with your family, this is your opportunity to sleep under the stars in the safety of the largest park in Johnson County. In addition to spending a night under the stars in Shawnee Mission Park, you will receive passes for admittance to Shawnee Mission Park Beach and pedal boat rental, and receive tickets to The Theatre in the Park’s production of “Beauty and the Beast.” As a special bonus, you will receive early admittance to the show, as well as the opportunity to attend a meet-and-greet with some of the cast in the show. Campers will need to bring their own camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, etc.). Saturday evening dinner is not provided. Community grills are available at Shelter 2. Donuts, juice, and milk will be provided Sunday morning. This is a 20 hour event. Early registration is recommended, space is limited. The 24th Annual 2008 Shawnee Mission Triathlon

The 24th Annual Shawnee Mission Triathlon regular course consists of a .62 mile swim, followed by an 18 mile bike, and a 4.5 mile run in Shawnee Mission Park. The short course consists of a .31 mile swim, followed by a 9 mile bike, and a 2.4 mile run. Team categories include: men, women, coed, family, and corporate. This event is limited to 700 entries and typically fills three weeks prior to race day. Early registration is strongly encouraged. Olathe Medical Center Women’s Triathlon at Kill Creek

JCPRD's first ever Olathe Medical Center Women’s Triathlon and Expo at Kill Creek Park will consist of a .31 mile (500 meter) swim, followed by a 10.6 mile bike and a 2.6 mile run. Teams can consist of two or three person teams in these categories, family, friends, corporate, and club. This event is limited to 350 participants so early registration is strongly encouraged. Registrations forms, event brochures and online registrion are available at the OMC Triathlon web page or contact us by phone. This event will be Sanctioned by USA Triathlon so each entrant (including team members) must be a member of USAT. If you are interested in volunteering for this event please call (913) 236-1231.
