Spring Fling Fun Geocaching at Nall Park

Geocache with JCPRD this spring! On this modern day scavenger hunt our staff will loan and teach you how to use a GPS (Global Positioning Systems) device donated by Garmin to find hidden caches filled with small prizes. After the hunt, join us at the shelter for hotdogs and s’mores. Participants registered as a family will be loaned one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will be loaned one GPS unit. This fun family event is just $13 per person ($15 nonresidents) or $31 per family of four or less ($34 nonresidents). Big Bull Creek Park Groundbreaking Ceremony

Join us for a groundbreaking ceremony for the development of Phase I of the Big Bull Creek Park Master Plan. This will take place at the nearby site of the future Sunflower entrance to Big Bull Creek Park, and will feature a number of local officials from Edgerton, Gardner, Johnson County, and JCPRD. Initial plans for Phase I of 1,980-acre future Big Bull Creek Park include a combined park maintenance building and Johnson County Park Police substation to be located just north of the intersection of Four Corners Road and 199th St. Other anticipated amenities include a parking lot, two picnic shelters, a restroom, a discover nature playground, and a three-quarter-mile paved trail on Sunflower Road north of 207th St., and a group campground near 213th St. east of Spoon Creek Road. Officials anticipate an early 2018 completion.

Mildale Farm Community Day

Bring the family out and spend the day exploring the Mildale Farm property during this free public event. Visitors can explore and picnic on the 158-acre site including the 22-acre rental property as well as about 136 acres of adjacent agricultural property, all of which was purchased by JCPRD in 2005. Visitors will be directed to park in the large parking lot near Mildale Farm’s main barn which features peg construction and a hand-laid brick floor. Arts and Craft activities for the kids will take place in the main barn. Catch-and-release fishing in any or all of seven ponds within the 158-acre area will also be offered, so bring your own bait and tackle. While District fishing permits have been waived for this event, Kansas residents ages 16 to 74 and nonresidents 16 and older need to have a Kansas state fishing license. Restrooms will be available, but the property’s two homes and other outbuildings will not be open during this event. Remember, no alcohol is allowed, pets must be on-leash, and vehicles must remain on roadways. For more information, contact Sarah Vogelsberg or visit the Mildale Farm Community Day web page.

TimberRidge Adventure Center Open House

If you have not seen TimberRidge Adventure Center yet, now is your chance! During our annual Open House, choose from several activities: canoeing, kayaking, pedal boating, hiking, BB gun shooting, and archery. Participants need to be eight years or older for the BB gun and archery range activities. All ages are welcome to participate in the Family Fun Treasure Hunt from 11 am - 2 pm. Catch and release fishing also available, however participants age 16 and older are required to have Kansas fishing license. Licenses will not be sold on site. Cops n’ Bobbers will be on site with poles and bait available for use or you may bring your own. Visit and see all the programs and amenities that TimberRidge has to offer. Experience the Hawk’s Nest Climbing Tower! An open climbing event for interested parties ages 12 and older will be held. Climbers will need to pre-register as space is limited. Climbing participants are required to complete medical and liability releases prior to participating. Children under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian’s signature. Climbing enrollment is limited to 40 people. Please call to register.

Family Bingo Night at Roeland Park Community Center

This is a great opportunity for the family to unplug and have fun together, just in time for Mother’s Day! We’ve added twists and special treats to make the game more active, silly, and a family night to remember! Prizes include gift bags and gift certificates. Hot dogs, macaroni & cheese, veggies, and a dessert will be served at 6:30 pm followed by nine games of Bingo; each player receives two cards. This fun family event is $8 per person ($10 nonresidents) or $27 for a family of four or less ($30 nonresidents.) Celebrate the Magic of Nature as we discover the hidden world of the wee folk and friends, real and make believe. Follow the Pixie Path through the forest. Don’t worry about the trolls as we search for nature’s treasure. Let your imagination go wild designing a fairy house and wand with the Green Fairy’s repurposing supplies. Enjoy a sweet treat at the Tea Party. The Fairy Queen will tell stories of magic and mischief. Watch the Fairy Parade with live animals! Music and a trip through the Wish Tree make for an enchanted day to remember. Park visitors can visit activity stations at their leisure. Advanced registration required. Fee is non-refundable. In case of inclement weather, program will be indoors. This magical event is $6 per person, including adults ($8 nonresidents.) Advanced reservations required. Free Day at the Pool for RP Residents at Roeland Park Aquatic Center

All Roeland Park residents are welcome to enjoy themselves at the aquatic center for free on this day. Photo identification/proof of residency required for free admission. Mom & Me Camping Event at TimberRidge Adventure Center

Looking for some unplugged time with your kids? Come enjoy an overnight experience together in the great outdoors! Event will begin with tent set-up and dinner, followed by a sunset hike and campfire. Programmed activities end at 9 pm. Group breakfast will be available between 7 and 8 am with the event ending by 9 am. Don’t have a tent, but want to come? We have one you can rent for $10 ($11 nonresidents), you will need to bring bedding and other supplies. This is a great way to try camping without purchasing all the equipment. Overnight Fishing at Shawnee Mission Park

Grab your fishing pole and lantern for the first overnight fishing opportunity of the summer! The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers ages 16-74 will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park & Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. Johnson County Sailing Society - Come Sail with Us at Shawnee Mission Park Lake

All sailors and sailing enthusiasts are warmly welcome to join us for lunch along with the graduates of the Sailing I class. Bring your sack lunch, and afterwards you will have an opportunity to sail a variety of vessels while participating in water activities like mock races or a sailing scavenger hunt.
