Lanesfield School Country Christmas at Lanesfield Historic Site

Experience a traditional 1904 old-fashioned Christmas! Celebrate a traditional community Christmas with letter writing to Santa with pen and ink and create your very own ornament. Find old-fashioned stocking stuffers in our gift shop. All ages welcome. Drop in anytime between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in December for this free program. Holidays for the Animals at Ernie Miller Nature Center

The holidays are a time of gifts and generosity. Whether you’re an individual, family, or a group looking to make a difference, how about contributing a gift to the animals at the Ernie Miller Nature Center? The Nature Center has ongoing needs for supplies for both the animals we keep at the center and the wild animals that come to our feeders. Please look over the following list and consider making a contribution: newspapers, brown & green duct tape, various sizes of clear critter totes/ pet keepers boxes with lids; bags of reptile bedding; gift certificates to LifeTime Pets, Price Chopper, Wal-Mart, or Petland; pinewood shavings, cat litter (non-clumping), bleach, fragrance free laundry soap; bags of safflower or black oil sunflower seeds (no mixes, please); suet cake; rolls of ¼ inch & 3/8 inch sisal rope; white and apple cider vinegar; Thanks in advance! Donors who wish to be recognized will have their names listed in the Nature Center’s Tracks newsletter so please take time to record your donation at the Nature Center!

50 Plus Holiday Sweater Party at Matt Ross Community Center

Get in the holiday spirit while wearing an ugly or beautiful holiday sweater. Prize for each category. Traditional favorites sung by the Barbershop Harmonizers. Winter Solstice Celebration at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Take a break from the busy holiday festivities as we walk through the woods, along little Cedar Creek to witness the natural display of winter’s quiet time. The trails will be lit by luminaries. Warm up by the fireside and listen to star stories about the longest night of the year. Visit live owls and discover animal mysteries of survival during the long winter. Gather round for campfire treats of toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. Drop in for ongoing activities. Please note: Portions of this program will be outdoors, please dress for the weather. Behind-the-Scenes Museum Tour at JoCo Arts & Heritage Center

Interact with museum staff as you learn why we collect, how we collect, and the importance to our local community. Our collection features over 17,000 3D objects and over one million images. The Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center holds the museum’s two-dimensional collection, including manuscripts, maps, photographs, and quilts. To schedule a separate time for your group of six to 12 people, or a tour for youth, please call (913) 826-ARTS. This informative event is $10 for adults or $9 for seniors (60+), $8 for children and includes museum and KidScape admission. Register online today! Christmas Tree Recycling at The Theatre, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks

Natural tree collections begin Dec. 26 at The Theatre in the Park, located just north of the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Park, and the marina parking lots of Heritage Park Marina and Kill Creek parks. Trees will be collected at all three sites from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 during regular winter park hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except at Shawnee Mission Park, which opens at 6 a.m. No yard waste will be accepted - only Christmas trees. Wrappers should be removed from the discarded trees as well as any remaining decorations, particularly “icicles” and decorations made from mylar, shiny plastic, or aluminum. There is no charge for the disposal of trees, and this program is open to anyone regardless of residency. Please call for more information.

By day or night, out of the sky flies a rodent’s nightmare, the birds of prey. Join our interpretive staff as they show why rodents fear these great birds.
