Fall Group Hayrides at Shawnee Mission Park

Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Heritage Park or the beautiful Oak Ridge area in Shawnee Mission Park. Our hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await you. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $6.50 per person, and groups will need to reach a $75 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week and Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call now to reserve a date and time for your group. There’s nothing scary about this enchanted forest. Enjoy a walk on the trail with the award-winning Nature Center staff. Costumed storybook characters will delight and entertain audiences of all ages. Meet with the Good Fairy and Forest Friends. A Trail of Stardust - The Orionids Meteor Shower at TimberRidge Adventure Center

Join us at TimberRidge Adventure Center for the chance to see some remains of Halley’s Comet streak through the sky and a personal tour of October skies. There will be a 45 minute interpretive program about the meteor shower and the fall constellations followed by another 1¼ hour of on your own star gazing. Bring your own blanket or chairs to sit on. Feel free to bring your own binoculars and star maps, but they are not necessary. There will be a short walk in the dark to reach our viewing location. A treat will be provided. In case of rain or clouds there will be a topic related indoor program. This adventurous program is just $9 per person for Johnson County residents ($10 for nonresidents.) Haunted Kansas at Ernie Miller Park

As darkness falls, walk through the trails of Ernie Miller Park and listen to the stories of long ago. Characters from the past will share legends around the campfire. Expect a shiver down the spine and a mild case of goose bumps for those who dare enter the forest on this autumn evening. This program is recommended for ages 8 and older. Group sessions begin every 20 minutes and the program is approximately one and one half hours. This spooky story time is just $5 per person, including adults. Spooktacular Kids Costume & Pumpkin Carving Contests & Pet Parade at RPCC

Carefully select your costume, round up your family, friends and pets and head to the Roeland Park Community Center for a spooktacular morning. The morning’s festivities will include a kids costume contest and a pet parade (pet costumes encouraged) and pumpkin carving contest. Trick-or-Cache at Antioch Park

Come experience Trick-or-Cache this Halloween! Learn to use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to track a cache in a fun, relaxed environment. GPS units will be provided on this modern-day scavenger hunt for Halloween treats. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Participants registering as a family will receive one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will each receive a GPS unit. Don’t forget your costume! Join us after your haunted hunt for hotdogs and s ‘mores around the campfire. This exciting event is just $10 per person ($11 nonresidents), or $27 for a family of four or less ($30 nonresidents). Mildale Farm Fall Fest

Bring the family and spend the day exploring the Mildale Farm property and enjoy a number of fall activities during this free public event. Visitors can explore and picnic on the 158-acre site including the 22-acre rental property as well as about 136 acres of adjacent agricultural property, Park near Mildale Farm’s main barn which features peg construction and a hand-laid brick floor. Nearby, they’ll find cider and hot cocoa and a large pumpkin patch. A tractor-drawn shuttle will take visitors to a fire circle in the south-central portion of the Mildale site, where they can roast marshmallows and enjoy storytelling. There will also be guided nature walks and horse-drawn hayrides. Catch-and-release fishing in any or all of seven ponds within the 158-acre area will also be offered, so bring your own bait and tackle. While District fishing permits have been waived for this event, Kansas residents ages 16 to 74 and nonresidents 16 and older need to have a Kansas state fishing license. Restrooms will be available, but the property’s two homes and other outbuildings will not be open during this event. Remember, no alcohol is allowed, pets must be on-leash, and vehicles must remain on roadways. Please contact Jennifer Combs for more information.

Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat - Three (3) JCPRD Locations

Students enrolled in the district’s 27 Afterschool Programs will Trick-or-Treat for canned goods instead of candy. Around Halloween they will be going door to door, escorted by staff, in the neighborhoods around their schools to solicit donations for area food pantries. Assistance from the public is also sought as collection boxes will be placed at three JCPRD office locations from Oct. 27-31. Those sites are: Building A at, Antioch Park, the Administration Building at Shawnee Mission Park, and New Century Fieldhouse. Among the most-needed food items are: canned soup, vegetables, fruit, and meats, boxed meals, peanut butter and jelly, and hot and cold cereal. Donations will be distributed to local food pantries. Help us fill the shelves of our area food pantries. Please call for more information.

Fall Public Hayrides at Oak Ridge in Shawnee Mission Park

In addition to fall hayrides for organized groups, the Johnson County Park & Recreation District offers this annual opportunity for individuals and family members to enjoy the crisp autumn air from a tractor drawn hay wagon without having to worry about reaching minimum numbers or placing a deposit. Like the group program, this hayride will last approximately one hour, and will be followed by a one hour campfire with apple cider and marshmallows. The cost is just $6.50 per person. *New Location* Christmas Tree Recycling at The Theatre, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks

Natural tree collections begin Dec. 26 at The Theatre in the Park, located just north of the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Park, and the marina parking lots of Heritage Park Marina and Kill Creek parks. Trees will be collected at all three sites from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 during regular winter park hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except at Shawnee Mission Park, which opens at 6 a.m. in the winter. No yard waste will be accepted - only Christmas trees. Wrappers should be removed from the discarded trees as well as any remaining decorations, particularly “icicles” and decorations made from mylar, shiny plastic, or aluminum. There is no charge for the disposal of trees, and this program is open to anyone regardless of residency. Please call for more information.
