Overnight Fishing at Shawnee Mission Park

Grab your fishing pole and lantern for the final overnight fishing opportunity of the season! The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers ages 16-74 will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park & Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. Patriot Golf Days at JCPRD Golf Courses

Those golfing at the Heritage Park and Tomahawk Hills golf courses Friday, August 29 through Monday, September 1 will be asked to consider making a minimum donation of $1 per person to benefit families of our wounded or fallen soldiers. All proceeds go to The Folds of Honor Foundation, which awards scholarships and other assistance to the spouses and children of soldiers who have either been seriously disabled or who have given their lives while serving our country in Afghanistan or Iraq. This event, which began in 2007, has raised more than $1.1 million at over 3,200 golf facilities nationwide. Pops in the Park at The Theatre in the Park

The Kansas City Symphony’s free Labor Day concert celebrates the holiday with familiar classics, from Bernstein to Copland to John Williams’ “Star Wars Suite.” Bring your family and friends, plus blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic dinner. The parking lot opens at 4:30 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. The Symphony’s Instrument Petting Zoo starts at 5:30 p.m., and pre-concert entertainment provided by the Youth Symphony of Kansas City begins at 6 p.m. Sponsored by Bank of Kansas City with media support from 99.7 The Point and 106.5 The Wolf. Animal Tales Storytime - Butterfly Daze at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Butterflies flutter through the air and delight us with their bright colors. Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we learn all about butterflies. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required.

Moths in the Moonlight at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Like a moth to a flame, be drawn into the secret lives of these fascinating insects. We have all seen moths flying around our porch lights. Why do they do that? Come and learn about their lifecycle, the differences between butterflies and moths. Using black lights, we will attract live moths and other insects and we will play interactive games. This interesting evening is just $3.50 per person, including adults. Call for more information and reservations. Reservations are recommended for this event.

Fairground Hoe Down at Johnson County Fairgrounds

Grab your partner and head on down to the Johnson County Fairgrounds for good food, entertainment and company. Start the night off with our menu of warm chili and tasty cornbread. Enjoy a few games of bingo with prizes donated from business in and around the area, then onto musical entertainment and a bit of square dancing! Not a square dancer? Don’t worry, we’ll show you some moves. This knee-slapping good time is just $5 in advance or $7 at the door. Doors open at 5 pm with dinner served at 6 pm. Beginners Pickleball Tournament at Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West

Show off your competitive spirit in a fun, beginner’s only atmosphere! Awards presented for division in men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. This exciting tournament is $20 per person. T-shirts are available for $6, lunch for $7. Players are responsible for refereeing their own games. All players must be 50 years of age by the registration deadline of Friday, September 5. Olathe Medical Center Women’s Triathlon at Kill Creek

The seventh annual Women’s Triathlon at Kill Creek Park will consist of a 500 meter swim, followed by a 10.6 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. Teams can consist of two or three person teams in these categories, family, friends, and club. This event is limited to 450 participants so early registration is strongly encouraged. Scouts Wildlife Adventure at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Join us at JCPRD's Ernie Miller Nature Center and meet with a JCPRD Park Naturalist and Park Police Officer to explore what they do to help conserve wildlife and our local wild areas. Dis¬cover wildlife in our area by meeting live animals from the Nature Center and learn about endangered and extinct spe¬cies. Bird watch, go on a bug hunt, and learn about poisonous plant and animals. Leave with a bird feeder you made so you too can be a part of the effort to conserve wildlife! This event will help you earn Tiger Cub Electives 31 and 32, Wolf Cub Elective 13, Bear Cub Achievement 5, or Webelos Naturalist Activity Badge. Fall Group Hayrides at Shawnee Mission Park

Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Heritage Park or the beautiful Oak Ridge area in Shawnee Mission Park. Our hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await you. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $6.50 per person, and groups will need to reach a $75 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week and Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call now to reserve a date and time for your group. Frogs and Fairies Geocaching at Santa Fe Commons Park

Experience frogs becoming princes and fairies flitting around the park! Learn to use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to track a cache in a fun, relaxed environment. GPS units will be provided on this modern day scavenger hunt. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Par-ticipants registering as a family will receive one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will each receive a GPS unit. This fun family outing is just $10 ($11 for nonresident) per person, or $27 ($30 nonresident) for a family (up to four.) 6th Annual Cars in the Park Car Show at Shawnee Mission Park Marina

Shine your car, truck, hot rod, or motorcy¬cle because it is time to show it off! This rain or shine event is for all ages and runs from 9 am to 2 pm. There will be plenty of amazing door prizes and the 50/50 pot. All car show participants must be registered and on-site by noon to be judged. Regis¬tration will start around 8 am. Awards will be given out promptly at 1:30 pm. Following the awards ceremony at 2 pm, we will conclude the show by taking a cruise through beautiful Shawnee Mission Park. Pre-registration will be accepted until Sept 26 at the cost of $20 per vehicle. On the day of the show the fee increases to $25 per vehicle. All proceeds will benefit JCPRD’s Special Olympics/Special Populations Department. This event is free for spectators. Fall Public Hayrides: Oak Ridge at Shawnee Mission Park

In addition to fall hayrides for organized groups, the Johnson County Park & Recreation District offers this annual opportunity for individuals and family members to enjoy the crisp autumn air from a tractor-drawn haywagon without having to worry about reaching minimum numbers or placing a deposit. Like the group program, this hayride will last approximately one hour, and will be followed by a one hour campfire with apple cider and marshmallows. The cost is just $6.50 per person.
