JCPRD's May - August 2017Activities Catalog Released

Our May - August Activities catalog lists more than 800 programs offered by JCPRD though August 2017. This issue will also include information about the HP3 Duathlon, the Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon, and Women's Triathlon as well as other popular spring and summer events including: Trucks and Big Rigs for Kids, A Day in the Park, Ernie Miller Park Amphitheater programs, the Great American Family Campout, and much more. Program offerings range from arts and crafts to sports to nature activities, and include leagues, classes, seminars, workshops, and trips. Included are programs for toddlers through senior adults. Registration for classes in the next catalog will begin immediately after catalogs arrive. The majority of programs start on or after May 1.

Animal Tales Storytime - Turtle Time at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Did you know that some turtles can live to be hundreds of years old? Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we learn more cool facts about turtles! The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required.

2017 KC Passport to Adventure Kick-off at Bass Pro Shop

Visit booths and hands-on activities, then pick up your 2017 Passport to Adventure that you can take to area natural and historical sites throughout the year and get it stamped. (2nd Start) Easter Bunny’s Extreme Egg Hunt at Shawnee Mission Park

The Easter Bunny has taken the traditional egg hunt to the extreme this year! The only way to find those prize-filled eggs is with a GPS (Global Positioning Systems) unit! The event begins at Shawnee Mission Park Shelter #4. Each family is loaned one GPS unit and given instructions on how to use the device to find hidden eggs scattered throughout the park. Lunch and pictures with the Easter Bunny included! This fun family event is just $13 per person ($15 nonresidents) or $31 per family of four or less ($34 nonresidents). Pre-registration required by April 3. Trucks & Big Rigs for Kids at The Theatre in the Park

Have you ever wondered what the inside of that big rig or tractor looks like? Do you have a child who LOVES trucks? Bring them out to the park to explore trucks, tractors, construction, and city vehicles up close. Crawl, climb, and sit in the driver’s seat and talk with the real life operators of these vehicles. Be one of the first 50 children and get a free construction worker hat! Suggested donations of $10 per vehicle will be accepted and proceeds from this event benefit JCPRD Special Populations/Special Olympics.

50 Plus Walking Bingo at Antioch Park

Spring into action and enjoy a fun, new twist on this classic game! Walk to win fabulous prizes and enjoy delicious refreshments. In the event of rain, a make-up date will be chosen. 50 Plus Soup, Salad and the Strolling Strings at Matt Ross Community Center

Join us for a delicious lunch of soup, salad, bread, and dessert. Delightful melodies by the talented Shawnee Mission North Strolling Strings entertain during the meal. Strollers play a variety of stringed instruments including the violin, cello, bass and viola. This delightful event is just $13 per person. Pool Instead of School at Roeland Park Aquatic Center

Are the kids looking for something fun to do during those teacher in-service days? Join us for a themed pool party and get moving instead of staring at electronic devices. Participants will be lead in 30 minutes of pool games, have 90 minutes of free play in the pool, and leave with a special treat. Participants must pass a swim test to be allowed in the deep end. For the Love of Earth! at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Earth Day is an opportunity to tackle environmental awareness. Meet Mother Nature with her animal friends, make a craft to take home, and learn about nature’s recyclers. Attend a native plant program with a Master Naturalist. Explore the forests and prairies and discover how you can become green at heart. Help us celebrate the 47th anniversary of Earth Day. 21st Annual Panzon's Benefit Lunch for JCPRD Special Olympics

Join us for JCPRD’s 21st Annual Panzon’s fundraiser. The Panzon’s Fundraiser allows over 200 Special Olympics athletes an opportunity to compete in local, regional, state and national competitions. Money raised from this event will be used to offset costs of tournament trips, participation fees and equipment. Raffle ticket sales will take place day of as well for some excellent donated prizes so be sure to bring some dough for raffle tickets! Ticket sales are $10 and that gets you tacos, rice, beans, chips, salsa, and a soft drink. For more information, contact Lindsey.

Spring Fling Fun Geocaching at Nall Park

Geocache with JCPRD this spring! On this modern day scavenger hunt our staff will loan and teach you how to use a GPS (Global Positioning Systems) device donated by Garmin to find hidden caches filled with small prizes. After the hunt, join us at the shelter for hotdogs and s’mores. Participants registered as a family will be loaned one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will be loaned one GPS unit. This fun family event is just $13 per person ($15 nonresidents) or $31 per family of four or less ($34 nonresidents). TimberRidge Adventure Center Open House

If you have not seen TimberRidge Adventure Center yet, now is your chance! During our annual Open House, choose from several activities: canoeing, kayaking, pedal boating, hiking, BB gun shooting, and archery. Participants need to be eight years or older for the BB gun and archery range activities. All ages are welcome to participate in the Family Fun Treasure Hunt from 11 am - 2 pm. Catch and release fishing also available, however participants age 16 and older are required to have Kansas fishing license. Licenses will not be sold on site. Cops n’ Bobbers will be on site with poles and bait available for use or you may bring your own. Visit and see all the programs and amenities that TimberRidge has to offer. Experience the Hawk’s Nest Climbing Tower! An open climbing event for interested parties ages 12 and older will be held. Climbers will need to pre-register as space is limited. Climbing participants are required to complete medical and liability releases prior to participating. Children under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian’s signature. Climbing enrollment is limited to 40 people. Please call to register.

Mildale Farm Community Day

Bring the family out and spend the day exploring the Mildale Farm property during this free public event. Visitors can explore and picnic on the 158-acre site including the 22-acre rental property as well as about 136 acres of adjacent agricultural property, all of which was purchased by JCPRD in 2005. Visitors will be directed to park in the large parking lot near Mildale Farm’s main barn which features peg construction and a hand-laid brick floor. Arts and Craft activities for the kids will take place in the main barn. Catch-and-release fishing in any or all of seven ponds within the 158-acre area will also be offered, so bring your own bait and tackle. While District fishing permits have been waived for this event, Kansas residents ages 16 to 74 and nonresidents 16 and older need to have a Kansas state fishing license. Restrooms will be available, but the property’s two homes and other outbuildings will not be open during this event. Remember, no alcohol is allowed, pets must be on-leash, and vehicles must remain on roadways. For more information, contact Sarah Vogelsberg or visit the Mildale Farm Community Day web page.
