Mildale Farm Community Day

Bring the family out and spend the day exploring the Mildale Farm property during this free public event. Visitors can explore and picnic on the 158-acre site including the 22-acre rental property as well as about 136 acres of adjacent future parkland. Visitors will be directed to park in the large parking lot near Mildale Farm’s main barn which features peg construction and a hand-laid brick floor. Arts and craft activities for the kids will take place in the main barn. Catch and-release fishing in any or all of seven ponds within the 158-acre area will also be offered, so bring your own bait and tackle. While District fishing permits have been waived for this event, Kansas residents ages 16 to 74 and nonresidents 16 and older need to have a Kansas state fishing license. Restrooms will be available, but the property’s two homes and other outbuildings will not be open during this event. Remember, no alcohol is allowed, pets must be on-leash, and vehicles must remain on roadways. Contact Katie Baergen for more information.

TimberRidge Adventure Center Open House

If you have not seen TimberRidge Adventure Center yet, now is your chance! During our annual Open House, choose from several activities: canoeing, kayaking, pedal boating, hiking, BB gun shooting, and archery. Participants need to be eight years or older for the BB gun and archery range activities. All ages are welcome to participate in the Family Fun Treasure Hunt from 11 am - 2 pm. Catch and release fishing also available, however participants age 16 and older are required to have Kansas fishing license. Licenses will not be sold on site. Cops n’ Bobbers will be on site with poles and bait available for use or you may bring your own. Visit and see all the programs and amenities that TimberRidge has to offer. Experience the Hawk’s Nest Climbing Tower! An open climbing event for interested parties ages 12 and older will be held. Climbers will need to pre-register as space is limited. Climbing participants are required to complete medical and liability releases prior to participating. Children under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian’s signature. Climbing enrollment is limited to 40 people. Please call to register.

Shopping with a cause! Thanks to our friends at Whole Foods and their Community Giving Day program, you can help raise funds for JCPRD’s Ernie Miller Nature Center by shopping at the 119th St. Whole Foods store on Thursday, May 1. Known as America’s Healthiest Grocery Store™, Whole Foods will donate 5% of the day’s net sales to the nature center. Drop on by, buy some groceries and help the nature center! We will also have live animals at the store from 4pm-7pm!

Celebrate spring with the wonders of the forest, real and make-believe. Discover the hidden world of the wee folk and their friends-birds returning from migration and animals waking from hibernation. May apples are in bloom and the fairies gather where the woodland wildflowers grow. Follow the Pixie Path and design a fairy house in the forest. Wear your wings and make a wand for the Fairy Parade. Park guests can visit the activity stations at their leisure. The Fairy Queen will tell stories of magic, and mischief with an all new puppet show with Mother Nature! Live animals, music and a trip through the Wish Tree make this an enchanted day to remember! This magical event is just $5 per person, including adults, to be paid on site. Patron Appreciation Day at Seven JCPRD Facilities

We appreciate you! Bring the family to the following district facilities and enjoy special offerings at each one on this day only. At the Ernie Miller Nature Center, enjoy a 10 percent discount on all purchases in the Nature’s Corner Gift Shop. At the Heritage Park and Tomahawk Hills golf courses, enjoy one free bucket of range balls when you purchase one round of golf. At the Mill Creek Activity Center, enjoy free use of fitness equipment* and the walking track from 8 am to 2 pm. At the New Century Fieldhouse, there will be free drop-in basketball, volleyball, and soccer from 11am to 2 pm (be sure to bring sports balls to use). At the Roeland Park Aquatic Center, there will be free open swimming from noon to 5 pm Inside the Roeland Park Community Center, free use of fitness equipment* is offered from 8 am to noon and you can pick up a coupon for 10 percent off room rentals booked by June 6 for any 2014 date. *For safety, participants must be 14 years of age or older for these items. Celebrate Mexican culture and heritage with a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta! Our staff will cook up the dinner and provide the entertainment, you come for the fun. Animal Tales Storytime - Hurray, it’s May at Ernie Miller Nature Center

It’s May and spring is here! Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we learn all about May and celebrate spring. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required.

KC WildLands Workday at Ernie Miller Park

Interested groups and individuals are invited to assist with prairie restoration efforts at Ernie Miller Park during a workday planned in conjunction with Kansas City WildLands, a local conservation coalition. The workday on May 10 will involve the planting of prairie species. These are great opportunities to help with hands-on conservation work on the metro area’s dwindling wild acres. Participants should dress for the weather - long pants are suggested. KC WildLands will supply work gloves and drinking water. Some tools will be provided on-site, but participants are encouraged to bring their own hand shovels. 27th Annual HP3 Duathlon, 5K and 10K at Heritage Park

For 27 years the Johnson County Park & Recreation District has sponsored a duathlon at Heritage
Park for both individuals and teams, and in 2013 a 5K and 10K were added to the event. The duathlon portion of this year’s event consists of a 3.1 mile run, 17 mile bike, followed by another 3.1 mile run. The 5K and 10K courses are in and around Heritage Park. The transition area, located in the marina parking lot, provides an exciting location for spectators to cheer on the participants so bring your family and friends for a great time. Overnight Fishing at Shawnee Mission Park

Grab your fishing pole and lantern for the first overnight fishing opportunity of the summer! The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers ages 16-74 will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park & Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable.
