Fall Group Hayrides at Shawnee Mission Park

Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Heritage Park or the beautiful Oak Ridge area in Shawnee Mission Park. Our hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await you. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $6.50 per person, and groups will need to reach a $75 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week and Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call now to reserve a date and time for your group. Hayrides are available during September, October, and November. Two weeks advance registration is required. Please call for scheduling and information.

Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat - Three (3) JCPRD Locations

Students enrolled in the district’s 27 Afterschool Programs will Trick-or-Treat for canned goods instead of candy. Around Halloween they will be going door to door, escorted by staff, in the neighborhoods around their schools to solicit donations for area food pantries. Assistance from the public is also sought as collection boxes will be placed at three JCPRD office locations from Oct. 27-31. Those sites are: Building A at, Antioch Park, the Administration Building at Shawnee Mission Park, and New Century Fieldhouse. Among the most-needed food items are: canned soup, vegetables, fruit, and meats, boxed meals, peanut butter and jelly, and hot and cold cereal. Donations will be distributed to local food pantries. Help us fill the shelves of our area food pantries. Please call for more information.

50 Plus Halloween Dance with the Playboys at Matt Ross Community Center

JCPRD Park Winter Hours Begin

Johnson County Park and Recreation District winter park hours take effect on November 1. Antioch Park, Heritage Park, and Kill Creek Park will be open from approximately 7:30 a.m. – 8 p.m., while Shawnee Mission Park will be open from approximately 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. Other District parks with year-round dawn to dusk hours include: Ernie Miller Park, Sunflower Nature Park, Thomas S. Fall Public Hayrides at Oak Ridge in Shawnee Mission Park

In addition to fall hayrides for organized groups, the Johnson County Park & Recreation District offers this annual opportunity for individuals and family members to enjoy the crisp autumn air from a tractor drawn hay wagon without having to worry about reaching minimum numbers or placing a deposit. Like the group program, this hayride will last approximately one hour, and will be followed by a one hour campfire with apple cider and marshmallows. The cost is just $6.50 per person. Participants will meet at Site A in the Oak Ridge area of Shawnee Mission Park on Ogg Road, Shawnee. Advance registration is required. 50 Plus Mexican Fiesta at Cedar Lake Village

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in November! We may be six months late, but that won’t stop us from enjoying a taco bar and sombrero scavenger hunt. Holidays for the Animals at Ernie Miller Nature Center

The holidays are a time of gifts and generosity. Whether you’re an individual, family, or a group looking to make a difference, how about contributing a gift to the animals at the Ernie Miller Nature Center? The Nature Center has ongoing needs for supplies for both the animals we keep at the center and the wild animals that come to our feeders. Please look over the following list and consider making a contribution: various sizes of clear critter totes/ pet keepers boxes with lids; bags of reptile bedding; gift certificates to LifeTime Pets, Price Chopper, Walmart, or Petland; pinewood shavings, Mazuri Ferret Diet, cat lit¬ter (non-clumping), bleach, laundry soap; bags of safflower or black oil sunflower seeds (no mixes, please); suet cakes and dried seed corn on the cob; rolls of ¼ inch & 3/8 inch sisal rope; white and apple cider vinegar; quart size zip lock baggies. Kansas City WildLands Red Cedar Christmas Tree Event at Mildale Farm

Johnson County Park & Recreation District is once again partnering with Kansas City WildLands and offering the public an opportunity to remove invasive red cedars from JCPRD properties and take them home to decorate for the holidays! When you take home a native cedar tree, you’ll not only make your house smell great, you’ll be helping restore wild places to their original health. The location of this year’s event is Mildale Farm. This amazing 22-acre site is one of the region’s premier venues for weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats and other special occasions. Come see its rural charm and make an adventure of it! There will be a wonderful range of tree sizes and shapes to choose from, and a bonfire where you can warm up with some hot cider and cookies. Hay wagons will get you to the trees and back again, and volunteers will be there to help you cut, carry and tie down your tree if needed. A minimum donation of $15 for each tree is suggested, with proceeds benefiting natural community restoration throughout the Greater Kansas City region. Be sure to bring a handsaw (no chainsaws or axes) and rope to tie your tree to your vehicle. Sturdy boots and work gloves are recommended. If you’re coming from the north, take Interstate 35 South to Exit 210. Merge right (west) onto US-56 W toward Gardner/175th Street. Stay on US-56 W for 5 miles. Turn left at 199th Street and proceed a quarter-mile to the Mildale entrance on your left. If you’re coming from the south, take Interstate 35 North to Exit 202. Turn left on Sunflower and proceed about two miles. Turn right on East Fourth in Edgerton and follow it for about three blocks. Turn right on 56 Highway and make a second right on 199th Street. The farm entrance will be about a quarter-mile ahead on the left.

50 Plus Pickleball Tournament at The Jewish Community Center

*New Location* Christmas Tree Recycling at The Theatre, Heritage and Kill Creek Parks

Natural tree collections begin Dec. 26 at The Theatre in the Park, located just north of the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Park, and the marina parking lots of Heritage Park Marina and Kill Creek parks. Trees will be collected at all three sites from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 during regular winter park hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except at Shawnee Mission Park, which opens at 6 a.m. in the winter. No yard waste will be accepted - only Christmas trees. Wrappers should be removed from the discarded trees as well as any remaining decorations, particularly “icicles” and decorations made from mylar, shiny plastic, or aluminum. There is no charge for the disposal of trees, and this program is open to anyone regardless of residency. Please call for more information.
