Roeland Park Aquatic Center Closed for Dome Removal

The Roeland Park Aquatic Center will be closed as annual preparations are made for the summer season. RPAC will also have limited hours May 7 - 26 with the main pool open for regular lap swimming hours 6 am to 4:30 pm and 7 to 8 pm daily. The facility reopens to the general public on May 27. The RPAC will also be completely closed on May 14.

Animal Tales Storytime - May Day at Ernie Miller Nature Center

It’s May and spring is here - hurray! Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we learn all about May Day and celebrate spring. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required. Please call for more information.

Family Bingo Night at Roeland Park Community Center

This is a great opportunity for the family to unplug during National Screen Free Week and have fun together, just in time for Mother’s Day! We’ve added twists and special treats to make the game more active, silly, and a family night to remember! Prizes include gift bags and gift certificates. Sandwiches, macaroni & cheese, veggies, and a dessert will be served at 6:30 pm followed by 12 games of Bingo; each player receives two cards. This fun family event is $8 per person ($10 nonresidents) or $27 for a family of four or less ($30 nonresidents.) *Event is sold out. If you wish to be placed on the wait list, please call the Registration office at (913) 831-3355. Also, we will not be able to take walk-ins at the Ernie Miller Nature Center the day of the event. Celebrate the Magic of Nature as we discover the hidden world of the wee folk and friends, real and make believe. Follow the Pixie Path through the forest. Don’t worry about the trolls as we search for pirate’s treasure. Let your imagination go wild designing a fairy house and wand with the Green Fairy’s repurposing supplies. Enjoy a sweet treat at the Tea Party. The Fairy Queen will tell stories of magic and mischief. Watch the Fairy Parade with live animals! Music and a trip through the Wish Tree make for an enchanted day to remember. In case of inclement weather, program will be held indoors.

Overnight Fishing at Shawnee Mission Park

Grab your fishing pole and lantern for the first overnight fishing opportunity of the summer! The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers ages 16-74 will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park & Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. Nature Center Exhibit Gallery Grand Opening at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Join us to celebrate the grand opening of the Nature Center’s new exhibit gallery. This interactive gallery titled “Our Changing Landscape” features live animals, a water table, and hands-on exhibits that tell the story of Ernie Miller Nature Park. HP3 Duathlon, 5K and 10K at Heritage Park

The duathlon portion of the event is for individuals and teams and consists of a 3.1 mile run, 15.33 mile bike, followed by another 3.1 mile run. HP3’s 5K race is a family friendly race that is divided into three categories: youth, adult, and masters. All participants will receive a T-shirt and finishers medal. Storyteller Jo Ho at Johnson County Museum

Mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Oh my! The excitement of the zoo comes alive in the zoo'pendous stories of the custodian of the creatures, Dr. Zippity Zoo Da (alias Jo Ho). Visitors will sing their way from tadpoles to frogs, become reptiles with an attitude, and roar, grunt, squeak, and squawk in the animal hullabaloo. It will be a "Zoo"per time! This entertaining story hour is just $2 per person, and museum members are free. Groups of ten or more must pre-register.

Titanic Revisited at Mill Creek Activity Center

As the movie says, the Titanic was a “ship of dreams.” Reserve your ticket to a showing of this magnificent ship’s replica memorabilia. Discover some of the stories behind the scenes and learn more about some of the actual passengers. Our “tour guide” will deliver a brief presentation, and afterwards feel free to wander through the exhibit, where replica china, menus, and other artifacts are displayed. The presentation commences at 1:15 pm, and ticket holders are welcome to attend anytime between 1 pm to 7 pm., tickets are $10 each. Please register by phone by May 10.

Johnson County Sailing Society - Come Sail with Us! at Shawnee Mission Park Lake

All sailors and sailing enthusiasts are warmly welcome to join us for lunch along with the graduates of the Sailing I class. Bring your sack lunch, and afterwards you will have an opportunity to sail a variety of vessels while participating in water activities like mock races or a sailing scavenger hunt. Mr. Stinky Feet at the Johnson County Museum

Kansas City’s very own, Jim "Mr. Stinky Feet" Cosgrove has delighted audiences throughout North America and Europe for nearly two decades. Jim’s philosophy is that children are the stars of his shows, not him. His approachable style and ability to immediately connect with the audience has made him a cool favorite on the concert tour circuit. Come prepared to sing, dance, and have fun as a family. Tickets sold on a first-come, first-served basis; space is limited. Advance reservations are strongly recommended and can be obtained by calling directly. Maximum of three children per adult.
