Fall Group Hayrides at Shawnee Mission & Heritage Parks

Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Heritage Park or the beautiful Oak Ridge Parklands in Shawnee Mission Park. Our hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $7 per person, and groups will need to reach an $80 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week and Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please call to reserve a date and time for your group. Hayrides are available from September 16 through November 19. Two weeks advance registration is required.

Flight of the Monarch at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Celebrate the Monarch butterfly’s amazing annual migration. Join us in capturing, tagging, and releasing them to continue their journey to Mexico. Learn about these amazing insects and other native butterflies. Wear long pants to protect your legs as you run through the prairie and closed toed shoes to protect your feet. We have a limited number of insect nets, so you are welcome to bring your own. You will get tags to take home. This informative and interactive event is just $5 per person, including adults, in advance or $7 on site day of event. Register online today or call (913) 764-7759. Advance reservations required. Registration for this event closes on Sept. 21. This program is recommended for ages 8 and older, and all children must be accompanied by Parent/Guardian or one adult chaperone per group of 5.

Fall Public Hayrides at Oak Ridge at Shawnee Mission Park

In addition to fall hayrides for organized groups, JCPRD offers this annual opportunity for individuals and family members to enjoy the crisp autumn air from a tractor-drawn haywagon without having to worry about reaching minimum numbers or placing a deposit. Like the group program, this hayride will last approximately one hour, and will be followed by a one-hour campfire with apple cider and marshmallows. The cost is just $7 per person. Participants will meet at Site A at Oak Ridge at Shawnee Mission Park. Advance registration is required by Sept. 23. Register online today!

50 Plus Plants of the Prairie at Kill Creek Park

Gain appreciation of the plants that inhabit the beautiful prairie at Kill Creek Park as JCPRD Staff Member Ginger Werp explains and identifies prairie favorites. Cub Scouts Bear Adventure at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Take a one mile hike and visit stations along the way to earn your Fur, Feathers and Ferns Adventure. See some of the live nature center animals up-close and observe the wildlife in the park with binoculars. See a working compost bin and worm bin and learn about composting. Learn about extinct and endangered animals. Smell and taste herbs and plant an herb to take home. This educational event is $5 per person, including adults, in advance or $7 on site day of event if space is available. Register online today! Call for more information.

Cars in the Park at The Theatre in the Park

Shine up your car, truck, motorcycle, or specialty vehicle for the seventh annual Cars in the Park car show! Admission is free for spectators, and food concessions will be available. There will be a 50/50 pot and raffle. We will have participant choice judging for awards. If you are a vendor or would like information on sponsorship opportunities, please email Lindsey at lindsey.minnick@jocogov.org. Proceeds from this event go to benefit JCPRD Special Olympics programs so that athletes may afford to participate in many different activities. Each entry is $20 in advance, $25 day of the show. Whimsical Woods at Ernie Miller Park

There’s nothing scary about this enchanted forest. Enjoy a walk on the trail with the award-winning Nature Center staff. Costumed storybook characters will delight and entertain audiences of all ages. Meet with the Good Fairy and Forest Friends. Live animals, stories, songs, and surprises will highlight childhood favorites. Reservations are required. Group sessions begin every 15 minutes with program length approximately 1½ hours. Family Fun Day at the Johnson County Museum

Happy Anniversary to us! Bring the whole family to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the museum. Explore the museum’s signature exhibition featuring the 1950s All-Electric House, and play in KidScape! Museum Exhibit Speaker - Hallmark Cards Archives

Samantha Bradbeer, the Historian for Hallmark Cards, will share how a holiday becomes a card-sending occasion and stories behind the holidays. The Hallmark Archives houses a vast and diverse history of graphic design trends, and documents the greeting card industry over two hundred years. The significance of these holdings stem from Hallmark founder J.C. Hall's encouragement for a high level of quality and creativity and a longstanding tradition of support for the arts. Ribbon Cutting - Coffee Creek Streamway Park at Heritage Park Shelters 9 & 10

JCPRD invites you to bring the entire family to celebrate the opening of the Coffee Creek Streamway Park's initial phase of development! This 3.4 mile trail runs from Heritage Park east to 169th and Switzer Road. The ribbon cutting will take place at the trailhead located between shelters 9 and 10 in Heritage Park. 50 Plus Live Well Age Well at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center

Spend the day enjoying educational sessions and panel discussion on topics relevant to aging well in Johnson County for area experts. Experience what JCPRD has to offer through a variety of program demonstrations. Meet and explore the many businesses and services available to you or your aging loved ones. A variety of screenings, giveaways, and opportunities for door prize drawings available all day.

Trick-or-Cache at Antioch Park (3 time options)

Offering 3 different event times: (4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.), (5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.), or (6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.) Try out a new family activity this Halloween! Search for caches filled with candy and trinkets hidden around Antioch Park using Global Positioning Systems (GPS). GPS units, a tutorial, and meal are included during this modern day scavenger hunt. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Participants registering as a family will be loaned one GPS unit per family. Those registering as individuals will each be loaned a GPS unit. Costumes encouraged! Join us after your haunted hunt for hotdogs, s’mores, and spooky stories around the fire circle across from Shelter #2. This exciting event is just $12 per person ($14 nonresidents), or $30 for a family of four or less ($33 nonresidents). Register online today!

Behind-the-Scenes Museum Tour at JoCo Arts & Heritage Center

Interact with museum staff as you learn why we collect, how we collect, and the importance to our local community. Our collection features over 17,000 3D objects and over one million images. The Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center holds the museum’s two-dimensional collection, including manuscripts, maps, photographs, and quilts. Join us for this exciting annual fall event as 1,000 pounds are stocked at Kill Creek Park Lake at 2:30 p.m. and 2,000 pounds of trout are stocked in Shawnee Mission Park Lake at 3:45 p.m. Both lakes will be closed to fishing until the parks’ opening at 5 am, Saturday, Oct. 28. Family Overnight Camping at TimberRidge Adventure Center

Looking for some unplugged time with your kids? Come enjoy an overnight experience together in the great outdoors! Event will begin with tent set-up and dinner, followed by a sunset hike and campfire, program activities end at 9 pm. Group breakfast will be made available 7 - 8 am with event ending by 8 am. Don’t have a tent, but want to come? We have one you can rent. This is a great way to try camping without purchasing all the equipment. Due to time of year please be prepared for cooler evening temperatures. This outdoor family adventure is just $35 for a family of 2, $37 for nonresidents, add an additional camper for $18, rent a tent for $15. Register online today!
