Great Backyard Bird Count at Ernie Miller Nature Center

It’s easy as one-two-three. Every year biologists and researchers count on “you” to help them determine the health of bird populations here in North America. Join us as we count birds and contribute to a worthy cause. It just takes 15 minutes and you may see Northern Cardinals, Black-capped Chickadees, and many more feathered friends. Learn about the birds that spend winters in Northeast Kansas from experienced birders from Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City. Be sure to stop by and make a bird feeder from recycled materials. This is a free event and preregistration is not required. Call for more information.

Experiment with tape and paint to create your own abstract geometric painting, which Piet Mondrian called neoplasticism! 2016 Winter Trout Program at Two JCPRD Lakes

Come watch today’s stocking as 1,600 lbs. of trout are stocked at Kill Creek Park Lake at 2:30 p.m. and 3,800 lbs. are stocked in Shawnee Mission Park Lake at 3:45 p.m. After the fish are stocked, both lakes will be closed to all fishing until the siren start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, heralds the beginning of the 2016 trout season.

In our final series we’ll see how photographing plants, animals and landscape can be a wild adventure! What makes a good photograph? Discover how to compose beautiful works of art and memories that will last a lifetime and beyond. Learn from nature photographer and see amazing photos from the Nature Center, Kansas City Zoo, Yellowstone, Africa, and more. This hour long session will focus on basic skills for beginner photographers. Bring your camera to take a picture of an owl! Recommended for ages 8 and up. Shopping in the Garment District of Downtown KCMO

Tour our city! Visit the historic Garment District in downtown Kansas City. Many of the buildings date back to the 1870s and are on the National Register of Historic Places. We will tour the Historic Garment District Museum which has a unique collection of over 20,000 items and then shop in the unique boutiques and shops until we drop. Please dress for the weather. Juliette Gordon Low loved adventure and nature and thought girls should go camping! Juliette’s dream was to build bridges of understanding to promote world peace and international friendship. Her heart’s desire was for girls to have opportunities to develop courage, confidence and friendships. Join us for a special appearance of Juliette herself as she describes her childhood favorites and inspirations. All children must be accompanied by one adult chaperone per group of 5. Spring Fling Fun at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Come enjoy spring with a trip to Ernie Miller Nature Park. Visitors are welcome to view the aquarium and hike the trails all week. Park staff will entertain guests with a special program each day. Every program will feature live animals. One 45 minute session is just $3 per person, including adults. Programs that will be featured are: Monday - Predators on the Prowl: Kick off spring break learning about animals that hunt. Tuesday - Birds of Prey: Discover the amazing abilities of the raptors of this region. Wednesday - Surprising Snakes: Identify some local serpents and learn the snake dance. Thursday - Animal Stories: Hear multi-cultural myths and legends and meet the real animals who inspired the stories. Friday - The Park After Dark: Whooo lives here and roams at night? Spring Break Arts at Johnson County Museum

Join us during Spring Break for a series of art programs designed for children 4-10 years old. Daily themes introduce kids to art processes and fun as well as historic objects from the museum’s collection. Parent must stay with children. Dress for mess! Drop-in for families, groups of ten or more must pre-register by calling. Each creative two-hour session is just $3 per person and museum members are free. Programs that will be featured are: Monday - Flexible Glass Sculptures: Create your own flexible “glass” sculpture with wire, tissue paper and contact paper! Tuesday - Exploring Salt and Watercolors: What reaction do you think will happen when combining watercolor with salt? Join us as we experiment with watercolors, salt and glue! Thursday - Shaving Cream Marbled Paper: Design your own marbled paper with shaving cream and liquid watercolors! Friday - Circle Stamp Painting: A simple Styrofoam cup will be our stamp in this fun activity!

2016 Auditions for The Theatre in the Park at Blue Valley High School

Dust off your dance shoes and warm up your vocal cords...it's time for the 2016 auditions for The Theatre in the Park! Auditions for ages seven through adult will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays March 19 and 26 at Blue Valley High School. Easter Bunny’s Extreme Egg Hunt at Antioch Park

The Easter Bunny has taken the traditional egg hunt to the extreme this year! The only way to find those prize-filled eggs is with a GPS (Global Positioning Systems) unit! The event begins at Antioch Park Shelter #3. Each family is loaned one GPS unit and given instructions on how to use the device to find hidden eggs scattered throughout the park. After finding all the eggs, return back to the shelter for lunch and pictures with the Easter Bunny! This fun family event is just $10 per person ($11 nonresidents) or $27 per family of four or less ($30 nonresidents). Pre-registration required by March 14.
