Animal Tales Storytime - Butterfly Magic at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Butterflies flutter through the air and delight us with their bright colors. Join us for this listen and learn activity for children ages two to six as we learn all about butterflies. The 30-minute program features stories, songs and a visit from a special animal friend. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $2 per person including adults. Pre-registration is not required. Call for more information.

Patriot Golf Days at Both JCPRD Golf Courses

Those golfing at the Heritage Park and Tomahawk Hills golf courses on the Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday, of Labor Day weekend will be asked to consider making a donation to help ensure the future of families of our U.S.A. wounded or fallen soldiers. All proceeds go to The Folds of Honor Foundation, which awards scholarships to children of our military who were either seriously disabled or have given their lives in service to this country in Afghanistan or Iraq. This event began in 2007 and was hugely successful, raising more than $1.1 million from 3,200 golf facilities nationwide. More than $2000 was collected from these two local golf courses alone. Kansas City Symphony's Pops in the Park at The Theatre in the Park

The Kansas City Symphony’s free Labor Day concert celebrates the holiday with familiar classics. Bring your family and friends, plus blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic dinner. The parking lot opens at 4:30 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. The Symphony’s Instrument Petting Zoo starts at 5:30 p.m., and pre-concert entertainment provided by the Youth Symphony of Kansas City begins at 6 p.m. Sponsored by Bank of Kansas City with media support from 99.7 The Point and 106.5 The Wolf. Moths in the Moonlight at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Like a moth to a flame, be drawn into the secret lives of these fascinating insects. We have all seen moths flying around our porch lights. Why do they do that? Come and learn about their lifecycle and the differences between butterflies and moths. Using black lights, we will attract live moths and other insects and we will play interactive games. This interesting evening is just $3.50 per person, including adults and will be paid on site. For more information and reservations, call (913) 764-7759. 8th Annual Olathe Medical Center (OMC) Women’s Triathlon at Kill Creek

The eighth annual Olathe Medical Center Women’s Triathlon at Kill Creek Park will consist of a 500 meter swim, followed by a 10.6 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. The Duathlon Course is a new addition in 2015. The Duathlon Course will consist of a 3.1 mile run, followed by a 10.6 bike, and a 3.1 mile run. Teams can consist of two or three person teams. This event is limited to 450 participants so early registration is strongly encouraged. Complete details available at our OMC Women's Triathlon page. 50 Plus Foodie Fridays at Antioch Park

Try a new restaurant with a fun, active group of friends! Meet on the third Friday of each month at Antioch Park. This month we will be trying Rock and Brews in Overland Park. Each outing is $10 per person and includes transportation to and from the restaurants; participants are responsible for the cost of food and drinks on their own. Come to one outing or to all! Race for the Pennant Bingo at Antioch Park

International Observe the Moon Night at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Join us for a lunar astronomy program at Ernie Miller Nature Center as we observe the moon in this internationally coordinated event! Observe the moon through a telescope, learn about lunar phases, make impact craters and your very own moon journal, and more! You may also bring your own binoculars, blanket, or chairs. Ahoy Mateys! Grab yer buccaneer friends and set sail for Shelter # 2 at Shawnee Mission Park to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day. This adventure includes pirate activities and face painting in the shelter, a treasure hunt, grub, and playtime with yer new friends. Costumes encouraged! Flight of the Monarch at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Celebrate the Monarch butterfly’s amazing annual migration. Join us in capturing, tagging, and releasing them to continue their journey to Mexico. Learn about these amazing insects and other native butterflies. See the beautiful wildflowers that attract them. This informative and interactive event is just $5 per person, including adults, in advance or $7 on site day of event. T.A.K.E. Foundation Self-Defense Class at Kauffman Stadium

The Kansas City Royals, 99.7 The Point and The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation are excited to offer another free self-defense class on the field at Kauffman Stadium this season. Fall Group Hayrides at Shawnee Mission Park

Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Heritage Park or the beautiful Oak Ridge area in Shawnee Mission Park. Our hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await you. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $6.50 per person, and groups will need to reach a $75 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week and Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call now to reserve a date and time for your group. 6th Annual Cars in the Park Car Show at Shawnee Mission Park Marina

Shine your car, truck, motorcycle, or specialty vehicle for the sixth annual Cars in the Park car show! Pre-registration is $20 and day of the event is $25. Admission for spectators is free and concessions will be available. There will be a 50/50 pot and raffle. New this year is participant choice judging for awards. If you are a vendor or would like information on sponsorship opportunities please contact Kelly Reilly. This is a Special Olympics fundraising event and proceeds go to benefit JCPRD Special Olympics programs so that athletes may afford to participate in many different activities. Fall Public Hayrides at Oak Ridge in Shawnee Mission Park

In addition to fall hayrides for organized groups, the Johnson County Park & Recreation District offers this annual opportunity for individuals and family members to enjoy the crisp autumn air from a tractor-drawn haywagon without having to worry about reaching minimum numbers or placing a deposit. Like the group program, this hayride will last approximately one hour, and will be followed by a one-hour campfire with apple cider and marshmallows. The cost is just $6.50 per person. Participants will meet at Site A at Oak Ridge at Shawnee Mission Park. Advance registration is required.
