How to Read a Class Listing?

Adventure: An Evening on the Prairie (Ages 10 & Older Accompanied by Parent/Guardian)
Listen to the nocturnal creatures at TimberRidge Adventure Center. Canoe across the pond to a chorus of frogs and silently stalk hooting owls along the edge of the prairie. Hear the coyotes howl. Enjoy hot cider as we tell stories by the campfire. Weather permitting, view the stars and watch for meteors in a dark prairie sky. Bring binoculars, flashlight, and dress for the weather. Not recommended for younger children due to rough trails and darkness.

Adventure: Introduction to Tree Climbing (Ages 8&Older, under 18 must have Parent/Guardian on site
Do you have fond childhood memories of climbing trees or want your child to have the same experiences? This is your chance to reach new heights by learning how to ascend and descend trees wearing comfortable climbing harnesses and helmets. All equipment is provided and all knots are tied by staff. Participants should wear long pants and closed toed and heeled shoes. Participants are required to complete medical and liability releases prior to climbing. Birding: Owl Prowl (Ages 16 & Older and Children Ages 5 & Older Accompanied by Parent/Guardian)
Whoooo makes his home in Ernie Miller Nature Park? Who else but the Great Horned, Barred, and Screech Owls. Come for an informative talk featuring two live owls and an evening hike through the park. You’ll never know whooo you might spot! Come dressed for the weather and warm up with a cup of hot cider after the hike. Instructor: Interpretive Staff.

Go Green: Composting 101 (Adults 18 & Older)
What to do with all those leaves this fall? Discover how simple it is to make your own dirt. See a compost bin at work and learn many ways to create your own compost bin at home. Find out what you can put in the compost and how to take care of it. You will then reap the benefits of the fresh fertile soil you have created for your gardens or flower pots.

Green Event: Roeland Park Green Day Festival - Saturday, October 9, 10 am to 3 pm
Open to All Ages, Roeland Park Community Center Come one, come all! Join us for a wonderful day filled with fun activities and information. Enjoy a full stage of entertainment including a production of a StoneLion Puppet show to great music and exciting dance. Try your hand at a make it and take it table, see electric vehicles, enjoy the exhibits of many vendors showcasing their green efforts and find out ways to make your home more environmentally friendly. Information shared on how to reuse and recycle almost everything from computers to glass. Door prizes, food vendors, free puppet show-we’ve got it all!

Horseback Riding: Private Instruction-Hunter/Jumper Lessons (All Ages)
Building a strong relationship between horse and rider based on safety, knowledge, understanding and trust is the goal of private or group beginning, intermediate and advanced lessons being offered at the Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s White Fox Manor Stables. This facility is located on the southwest side of Heritage Park in Olathe, With large indoor and outdoor arenas, White Fox Manor Stables is a perfect year-round setting for riders to learn and grow. School horses are friendly and well-trained, or students may bring their own horse for an additional haul-in fee of $15 per session. Students will also learn about basic grooming and will be eligible to participate in periodic shows at the facility. Participants should wear jeans and low-heeled shoes. Map & Compass: Orienteering Workshop (Ages 16 & Older)
Do you like to hike cross-country but fear losing your way? This beginner’s workshop introduces you to orienteering, a fun way of learning the basic skills for using a topographic map and a magnetic compass. This class includes a practice orienteering hike in the park. Workbook and loan of compass are provided. Dress for the weather. Instructor: Possum Trot Orienteering Club.

Outdoor Skills: Survival Hike (Grades 1 & Up)
Do you have the “right stuff” to survive? Using the power of imagination and real physical challenges, participants will problem solve as they hike through the wilderness of Ernie Miller Park. Emphasis will be on map-reading, teamwork, decision-making, and staying safe outdoors. This activity can be tailored to groups, age, and experience level. Birds of Prey - (Grades 4 & Up)
By day or by night, out of the sky flies a rodent’s nightmare, the birds of prey. Using their powerful talons, beaks, and wings, they are some of nature’s best hunters. Your group will see up-close live examples of these majestic raptors and their special adaptations. Instructors: Interpretive Staff.

Snakes Alive (Grades 2 & Up)
There is nothing quite like a walk in the woods, until you hear the word “snake.” Why is it that these creatures seem so terrifying? Could all the stories you have heard about snakes be true? Join our Interpretive Staff as they explore the facts and fallacies of these legless wonders of the natural world. Instructors: Interpretive Staff.

Wildlife Who’s Who (Grades 4 & Up) Wildlife Webs (Grades K through 3rd)
Meet an amphibian, bird, and mammal in this 45-minute presentation. Learn about these animals and discover their inter-relationship with the food chain.
